FAUST MOVIE UPDATE

David Quinn told The Continuum that there will be two versions of the Faust: Love of the Damned movie.

Quinn said the first video and DVD, released on Aug. 28 by Lions Gate and Trimark, will be R-rated, and there will also be an uncut version.

"The MPAA required certain things be cut, so the uncut version shows stuff the other doesn't," Quinn said.

The film recently won awards for best film and special effects at the FantaFestival in Italy.

Quinn, who created the Faust comic with Tim Vigil, wrote the script for the film, which was directed by Brian Yuzna. The cast includes Mark Frost, Andrew Divoff, Isabel Brooks and Jeffrey Combs.

The movie was filmed in Barcelona, Spain. Here's how Lions Gate describes it:

"What happens when an ordinary man is so deeply hurt that, to take revenge, he is capable of doing absolutely anything -- even sell his soul to the devil? When John Jaspers' girlfriend is brutally murdered, he vows to avenge her death any way he can. When the mysterious M appears and offers a solution, John hastily agrees and signs the deal -- in blood. Suddenly John has powers he can't even control, much less understand. The violent urges, the razor-sharp claws, the constant pain and the pulsating scar on the palm of his hand - his constant reminder that everything has its price. Welcome to the nightmare of the 21st Century -- is it worth your soul?"

RON GARNEY ON UNCANNY X-MEN

Ron Garney is replacing Ian Churchill as artist of Marvel Comics' Uncanny X-Men.

"We're absolutely thrilled to have Ron back," Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada said of Garney, who in the past few years has drawn Captain America, Silver Surfer and Incredible Hulk for Marvel. "Losing a talent like Ian on a book like Uncanny is a tragedy, but sometimes luck smiles on you and you get a break.

"Ron is by definition the kind of artist that Marvel has always been known for. A great storyteller with great dynamics and an amazing imagination."

Quesada indicated that Churchill will continue to work with Marvel.

Garney's first issue might be Uncanny X-Men #400, which writer Joe Casey has said will be extra-sized. Look for Sean Phillips, Casey's collaborator on Wildcats, to be involved in at least two issues before Garney takes over.

As of Tuesday night, neither Garney nor Casey had returned The Continuum's request for comment.

Ethan Van Sciver, who is backing Frank Quitely on New X-Men, told The Continuum he will now be serving the same role on Uncanny for Garney.

"I've got a stack of New X-Men scripts, but I'm supposed to do Uncanny if they need me," Van Sciver told The Continuum.

"Frank needs me the most right now, so I'm doing the next story arc, which is #117-119 and maybe, possibly, perhaps #120. Uncanny is taken care of up through #399, I'm led to believe, with Ron Garney taking over around #400. Should Ron Garney need a fill-in, I'll be the first guy relied upon to do it. But Ron is pretty quick."

Van Sciver said he has spoken briefly with Casey.

"I have talked to Joe, yes," he said. "And it was just, 'Hello, we might be working together.' 'Really? Okay, the stuff I've seen so far of yours is great.'"

Van Sciver said his first arc on New X-Men with Grant Morrison is going well.

"It pertains to a new mutant named Angel that Grant and I are creating, and it's dark, dark, dark, as usual," Van Sciver said.

"I'm really happy, turning out some of the best stuff I've done. It's like being given a Lamborghini. The first day, you drive it around the block, overwhelmed. Before long, you're racing down the speedway at 500 miles an hour."

ELVIRA AT COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL

Cassandra Peterson, better known as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, will appear at Comic-Con International in San Diego on Thursday, July 19.

Peterson will present the West Coast premiere of her new movie, Elvira's Haunted Hills, and the publication of the 100th issue of her comic book from Claypool Comics.

Claypool will celebrate with events such as special discounts and sales, as well as a raffle of the entire run of Elvira #1-100, with the first issue signed by Elvira.

The year 2001 marks Elvira's 20th anniversary as a cult icon. Elvira's Haunted Hills is a gothic-horror comedy parodying the Vincent Price / Edgar Allan Poe films of the early 60's. The independent feature was filmed in Transylvania, Romania, and co-stars Richard O'Brien, writer/creator of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Elvira #100 will feature the story "Suburban Fear" by writer Kurt Busiek, pencil artist Dan DeCarlo and inker Terry Austin. The issue will also include "The Death of Elvira" by three Elvira veterans: writer Frank Strom, pencil artist Tod Smith, and inker Louis Lachance. The issue will be on sale in comic-book shops during August, with a special photo cover of Elvira and a cover price of $2.50.

FIRST LOOK: NEW X-MEN ANNUAL 2001

New X-Men Annual 2001 will arrive in stores this month from Marvel Comics. The issue is written by Grant Morrison, with art and cover by Leinil Yu.

Here's how Marvel describes the issue:

"Somone is seizing huge tracts of the Mongolian tundra - and they're not above exterminating the region's indigenous people to get it! At the heart of this terrifying conspiracy lies a rusting death camp - and at its heart waits the story's greatest mystery. Who is the Doomsday Mutant? Plus: Domino and the all-new X Corporation. Printed in Marvelscope, a format that creates a widescreen feel by creating a stapled spine not on this 48-page Annual's vertical side, but on its horizontal top."

New X-Men Annual 2001 will be 48 pages and will cost $3.50.
