SHERILYN FENN IN BIRDS OF PREY

Harley Quinn creator Paul Dini told The Continuum he approves of the casting of Sherilyn Fenn in the Birds of Prey pilot.

The WB has confirmed that Fenn will play Dr. Harleen Quinzel, also known as Harley Quinn.

"I think she's a good choice, especially as the creators have re-imagined not just Harley, but all the characters as darker and more intense than their comic-book and cartoon counterparts," Dini told The Continuum. "I was a big fan of Sherilyn's work on Twin Peaks. She'll add a nice dimension to Dr. Quinzel and her deeply twisted other side."

The WB made the announcement in conjunction with Fenn's guest-starring stint on the season's last three episodes of Dawson's Creek beginning April 24.

Fenn recently starred in the Showtime series Rude Awakening as a recovering alcoholic who must learn to deal with her demons. She just wrapped production on Showtime's $windle with Tom Sizemore.

Fenn is best known for her role as the cherry stem-tying Audrey in Twin Peaks. This role brought her national attention and a Golden Globe and Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

The Birds of Prey pilot stars Dina Meyer as Barbara Gordon/Oracle, Ashley Scott as Helena Kyle/The Huntress and Rachel Skarsten as Dinah Lance/Black Canary.

SPIDER-MAN MOVIE CARDS

Topps has informed The Continuum that its Spider-Man movie trading cards will reach stores the week of April 15.

The 90-card set will include action photos from the film, character profiles and behind-the-scene "secrets."

The set will have four levels of inserts: Spidey Hologram cards, Web-Shooter Clear cards, Spider-Sense Glow stickers and Web-Tech Foil cards.

Each pack will contain seven cards, with a suggested retail price of $2.

X-MEN: EVOLUTION UPDATE

X-Men: Evolution's "Walk On The Wild Side" episode, featuring the show's female members, will fully display the powers of Magma and Boom-Boom.

The girls featured in the episode - set to air Saturday at 11 a.m. (ET) on Kids' WB! -- also include Rogue, Jean Grey and Shadowcat and Boom-Boom.

Marvel Studios' Craig Kyle pointed out that the females wield plenty of power in X-Men: Evolution.

"In terms of powers, if you really put them in a line-up, I'd stick with the girls rather than the guys," Kyle told The Continuum. "The girls are where it's at."

NEW SMALLVILLE EPISODE

A new episode of Smallville, "Nicodemus," is scheduled to air on The WB on Tuesday, March 19.

Here's how the network describes the episode:

"Clark (Tom Welling) must solve the riddle of the mysterious Nicodemus flower and Lex's (Michael Rosenbaum) shady involvement after it infects the residents of Smallville, removing their inhibitions -- Jonathan (John Schneider) becomes a coach potato, Lana (Kristin Kreuk) puts the moves on Clark as the town Lolita and Pete (Sam Jones III) tries to kill Lex -- then puts them into a deadly coma."

James Marshall directed the episode, which was written by Greg Walker with a teleplay by Michael Green.

In other Smallville news, Allison Mack, who plays Chloe Sullivan, and Jones will guest-star in a two-part episode of Kids' WB!'s The Nightmare Room on Saturday, March 9 and Saturday, March 16.

Frankie Muniz of Fox's Malcolm in the Middle will also appear.

DAVE JOHNSON COVERS MICRONAUTS

Dave Johnson, the cover artist of 100 Bullets, will be doing the covers to Micronauts #1-3 from Image Comics and Devil's Due.

Johnson steps in for Michael Golden, the previously announced cover artist who had to back out because of a heavy workload, according to Image.

"Dave's covers on 100 Bullets kick butt every time," said Devil's Due president Josh Blaylock. "He's jazzed about being on this project, and I think we're in for some truly stunning Micronauts pieces."

Due in June, Micronauts #1 also features a cover by regular series artist, Eric Hanson, as well as a pin-up by Image vice-president/publisher Jim Valentino.

RANDY GREEN TALKS WHITE QUEEN, TOMB RAIDER

Randy Green told The Continuum that, in addition to drawing Top Cow's Tomb Raider, he will be drawing a four-issue White Queen mini-series for Marvel Comics.

White Queen will be part of the X-Men Icons series. It will be written by Sean McKeever.

"I like the X-Men Icons mini-series," Green said. "It's more of a character development kind of series instead of the 'We're going to save the world from Magneto' kind of thing.

"It's more of a character-driven story. It just deals with her and a couple of other characters. There's a lot of action in it, but it's more 1-on-1."

Green said White Queen is not on the schedule yet and will likely arrive in late fall. He will be drawing the mini-series after his first arc on Tomb Raider.

Green joins new Tomb Raider writer John Ney Reiber with #21. He said he will draw alternate arcs with Andy Parks.

"I'm very fortunate with Tomb Raider because I love that genre, the Indiana Jones kind of thing," Green said.

Green said he also hopes to get back to his creator-owned Dollz at some point.

"I have a real keen interest in it, but I can't do it now because I have so much other work," he said. "Later on, if I can find the time, I will re-lanch it. It will be different and I will self-publish it."

CROSSGEN TO BE PUBLISHED IN RUSSIAN

CrossGen Comics continues its worldwide expansion with the signing of a publishing deal with Russian publisher Izdatelstvo Komiks Ltd.

Izdatelstvo Komiks Ltd. is set to begin publishing the CrossGen Comics line in September to be distributed to the newsstand, comic shop and bookstore market in the Russian-speaking countries of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmen, Litva, Latvia and Estonia.

This new publishing agreement means CrossGen Comics are now available in at least 26 foreign countries and in five foreign languages. It also means that CrossGen's Comics on the Web will eventually be available in Russian.

Izdatelstvo Komiks Ltd. will begin by publishing monthly Russian editions of Mystic, Sigil, Scion, Meridian, The First and Crux.

The Russian comic book publisher, Izdatelstvo Komiks Ltd., or in English, Comics Publishing House, was established in Moscow in 2000 by a group of one of the largest Russian advertising and publishing companies' top managers.

According to James Breitbeil, CrossGen's Director of Marketing and Distribution, the launch of Comics on the Web has aided in the signing of new foreign publishers.

"Every comics publisher around the world wants to see the audience for comics grow," said Breitbeil. "With the launch of Comics on the Web, and the potential for millions of people worldwide to view our comics and then be drawn into the world of print comics, publishers are lining up for their chance to be a part of this initiative."

Ludmila Orlova Head of International Licensing for Izdatelstvo Komiks Ltd. believes CrossGen comics are a perfect fit for a Russian speaking population new to comic books.

"It's all a matter of quality and approach. To understand how perfect the CrossGen line of titles fits the Russian market we just have to take a closer look at the situation," Head said. "We have a growing demand for comics along with no particular history of the industry and comic readership, and our audience is not bound with historically favored heroes, brands or titles. This far we had been searching for products of top quality and highest market potential, and the CrossGen Universe with its eye-catching graphics, fabulous storylines and challenging manner of development approach is naturally a godsend for us."
