SMALLVILLE/BIRDS OF PREY UPDATE

The WB has announced new episodes of Smallville and Birds of Prey.

The Tuesday, Oct. 15 episode of Smallville will be "Red," written by Jeph Loeb and directed by Jeff Woolnough.

Here's how the network describes the episode:

"The school unknowingly uses red kryptonite in the class rings and its effect on Clark (Tom Welling) stuns his friends and family as he turns into a rebellious and dangerous teenager who decides to use his powers for evil instead of good. Jonathan (John Schneider) and Martha (Annette O'Toole) scramble to find the truth behind Clark's behavior before he exposes his true identity, while Lana (Kristin Kreuk) finds herself drawn to the 'new' Clark, who declares his love for her."

Loeb joined the Smallville creative team for the second season as a consulting producer and writer. This is his first episode as writer and he told The Continuum he's seen the episode almost entirely finished.

"Tom is amazing. It's a great performance," Loeb told The Continuum. "And there's a scene with Lana that folks will be talking about for a looooooooong time."

The second episode of Birds of Prey, "Slick," will premiere on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

Here's how the network describes the episode:

"Slick (guest star Silas Weir Mitchell), an evil meta-human who can turn from solid to liquid, is hired by Dr. Quinn (Mia Sara) to kill the honest cops who stand in her way. When Reese (Shemar Moore) is the next intended victim, Helena (Ashley Scott) comes to his aid and their mutual attraction continues to grow. Meanwhile, Barbara (Dina Meyer) believes Dinah's (Rachel Skarsten) story that she's just a runaway, but Helena remains suspicious."

Michael Katelman directed the episode, which was written by Laeta Kalogridis and Melissa Rosenberg.

ALAN CUMMING TALKS X-MEN 2

Alan Cumming, who plays Nightcrawler in X-Men 2, talked briefly about the movie during an appearance on E! News Daily on Friday.

"He becomes an X-Men, but the film starts out with him doing a bad thing, but then kind of get better," Cumming said. "I don't know. You're so sworn to secrecy."

Cumming was promoting the his book, Tommy's Tale. He said that at recent book signings, he is often given comics to sign as well.

Cumming described the look of the cinematic Nightcrawler.

"He's blue. He's got pointy ears. He's got yellow eyes. He's got hooves. And a tail," Cumming said. "The only thing that is different is that he doesn't have the same pecs or he doesn't the washboard stomach like he has the comic. He has my stomach."

JUSTICE LEAGUE'S METAMORPHO

The first part of the two-part "Metamorphosis" episode of Justice League will premiere on Friday on Cartoon Network.

Here's how the network describes the episode:

"While on duty, Green Lantern reunites with Rex Mason, a former Marine buddy who is now a successful executive at a large chemical company. But after Rex is exposed to a powerful mutagen that transforms him into a freakish abomination called Metramorpho, he blames his old friend Green Lantern and vows to destroy him."

The first part of the episode is written by Len Uhley, with the second part written by Dwayne McDuffie.

FIRST LOOK: WARLANDS: AGE OF ICE #8

Warlands: Age of Ice #8 will arrive in stores on Wednesday from Dreamwave Productions. The issue is written by Adrian Tsang, penciled by Mateo Guerrero, inked by Aure Jimenez and colored by Stuart Ng and Susan Luo.

Here's how Dreawave describes the issue:

"After tricking Zeph and his companions into following him back in time to steal an artifact of incredible power, Aragon sets his sights on saving Warlands from ecological disaster, by setting the entire planet ablaze. With the armies of both Ryotia and the Astral Plane standing in their way, Zeph and his companions must find a way to stop Aragon's mad plan. But in stopping Aragon, our heroes may lose the one chance they have to save Warland's fragile ecosystem forever."

Warlands: Age of Ice #8 will be 32 pages and will cost $2.95.

FIRST LOOK: APACHE SKIES #3

Apache Skies #3 will arrive in stores on Wednesday from Marvel Comics. The issue is written by John Ostrander, with art and cover by Leonardo Manco.

Here's how Marvel describes the issue:

"After a steady supply of sanitized Westerns populated by stoic sheriffs and black-hatted desperados, Hollywood both shocked and thrilled moviegoers with Unforgiven, a film that revealed the gray morality and harsh situations that mankind has faced in all eras. Writer John Ostrander and artist Leonardo Manco continue this modern look at this past age in Apache Skies, a four-issue mini-series from Marvel's adult MAX imprint. The third issue features Manco's distinctive painted art, which captures both the beauty and the brutality of that dangerous time."

Apache Skies #3 will be 32 pages and will cost $2.99.

NOVEMBER DCU BOOKS CONTAIN PREVIEW INSERTS

Four upcoming DC Universe projects will be featured in advance preview pages in select DCU titles as part of a special advertising insert in November.

The projects previewed are Aquaman, Gotham Central, Superman: Metropolis and H-E-R-O.

Each preview will include a cover and five story pages in full color on glossy paper and will be featured for one week during November. These eight-pages inserts will be bound into the center of all participating books.

"It's a cost-effective tool to promote four new titles with the kind of innovative advertising that continues to keep the cost of our books as low as possible," said Bob Wayne, DC's Vice President - Sales & Marketing. "I applaud our ad sales department for instigating this tool and the DC editorial group for its efforts to make it happen.

"Retailers are advised to take this promotion into consideration when they place their orders for each of these four titles. Once readers sample them, they're sure to want to pick up the debut issues."

The schedule for the advance preview pages and the books in which they appear are as follows:
