DAREDEVIL MOVIE UPDATE

Mark Steven Johnson, director of the upcoming Daredevil movie, said that Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada helped him to decide to deviate from the comics' version of the Bullseye costume.

"I was going to do the Bullseye costume just like the comic book," Johnson said during a recent convention appearance. "And I told Joe this, and Joe said, 'You're crazy. He's going to look like a tool.' I was like, 'No, it's going to be cool, and I'm going to do it exactly like the comic.

"But he was right. He was going to look like a tool in the Bullseye costume."

Johnson said the idea was to be true to the spirit of the comic. "Sometimes you have to make changes," Johnson said.

James Acheson, who did the costumes for Spider-Man, also did them for Daredevil. Shown here is Warren Manser's design for Bullseye.

Although the movie features Daredevil's origins, it will not show him in the yellow costume.

"If, God willing, this is successful, and then we could have a television show like Smallville," Johnson said. "It would be a really cool ideal with Daredevil in the college years."

In other DD notes:

* Ben Affleck, who stars as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, talked about starring in a super-hero movie.

"These movies, on one hand, are really exciting. The first action is always a rush because you're going, 'Oh this is the scene I imagined it to be,' and 'I grew up with the comic,' and this and that," Affleck said.

"Then it becomes a lot of work. It's about twice as hard as anything else. You shoot all day and then you have to do martial arts or wire practice. And all the time you're trying to learn all these moves and stuff you see up there, in rehearsal you're failing at it. So you're acutely aware that not only are you not a super-hero, you're a long way from being able to accomplish the one shot that you need to do. So it's kind of humbling.

"But it's fun. To wear the mask and costume is total fun. I'm going to steal the costume when the film is done."

* Quesada said that the Daredevil movie is "serendipity in action," recalling when he met Johnson when he was pitching the film.

"I was just so blown away by his passion; it was so amazing," Quesada said. "Afterward, we all said, 'We have to root for this guy for this movie.' He makes good movies. It doesn't matter if his other film was Simon Birch. A good movie maker is a good movie maker."

Quesada also noted that during his run on the Daredevil comic with Kevin Smith, Affleck was "the model in our minds."

* Johnson said he liked the "real" qualities of Daredevil.

"What really inspired me to make this movie is what made it different, which is what it would really be like to be a super-hero," Johnson said. "What would it really be like to be a guy who bleeds, who goes back to his apartment at night and pops pain pills?"

BIRDS OF PREY UPDATE

Lori Loughlin will guest-star as the Black Canary in the "Sins of the Mother" episode of Birds of Prey.

Loughlin, 38, plays Dinah's mother in the episode, which hasn't officially been scheduled yet by The WB.

Loughlin is best known for her eight-year stint on Full House, where she played Becky.

Sources told The Continuum that Loughlin is a "dead ringer" for the character and that she will be using her Canary Cry in the episode.

SPIDER-MAN REPLICAS STRANDED

More than 3,000 of Blockbuster's life-sized commemorative Spider-Man replicas were stranded at sea off the Los Angeles coastline, due to the West Coast port closure.

"We'd like to think that the Green Goblin is the prime suspect responsible for causing the delay in shipping our Spider-Man replicas to our stores, but I suppose that's just not the case," said Jim Notarnicola, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Blockbuster Inc. "However, I am delighted to report that despite the unanticipated delay, the replicas are all in tip-top condition."

The life-size commemorative replicas, handcrafted in China out of 70 pounds each of rubber, fabric, steel and plaster, were exclusively designed for Blockbuster as part of a sweepstakes the company is holding in celebration of the Nov. 1 release to video and DVD of Spider-Man.

"We've cast a wide web and are vigorously tracking Spider-Man's whereabouts on a daily basis," Notarnicola said.

Customers who purchase a Blockbuster Spider-Man 10-week movie rental card for $29.99 plus tax, through Oct. 31, will receive a free copy of the movie once it releases on Nov. 1, while supplies last. Customers who purchase a copy of Spider-Man after Nov. 1 will receive one full week free rental, through Dec. 16. All customers who participate in either offer will be automatically entered in to the sweepstakes, through Nov. 18. The replicas will be awarded as scheduled on Dec. 2.

The replicas were due in stores next week, however Blockbuster now expects the replicas to arrive in stores by mid-November.

"Hey, things could be worse ... at least they don't require any food or water," Notarnicola said.
