CHUCK RUSSELL TALKS WAY OF THE RAT MOVIE

By Rob Allstetter/The Comics Continuum

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Chuck Russell, who is writing and directing the Way of the Rat movie, couldn't make a scheduled appearance at MegaCon because of an injury, but he did make his presence felt, recording a message that was played Sunday at CrossGen's film/TV panel.

Following is an edited transcription of his comments:

* "I discovered this material through Michael Uslan, who is one of our producers and is there with you at MegaCon. I was immediately captivated by the stories, charmed with the characters and couldn't figure this talented group of people came from.

"And that's how I met CrossGen and Mark Alessi, the president, and Chuck Dixon, who is the writer of Way of the Rat and some of the other titles at CrossGen, and Jeff Johnson, who is one of the talented illustrators. These are great, talented people. They have created a story unlike anything I have ever read before. It is truly fun and I think it's going to make a spectacular motion picture."

* "So I'm busy living up to all that in the screenplay, we'll bring this back to DreamWorks, where this project is being developed and we'll be in pre-production within a couple of months after that. I would hope that we're shooting this film sometime this summer."

* "That is an extremely colorful cast and an opportunity to do a really grand adventure in a style that I have never quite seen before."

* "I think this movie will use everything I've learned, from Nightmare on Elm Street 3 to The Mask and more traditional films like Eraser and Scorpion King."

* "I've been getting such great help from all of the artists and writers on Way of the Rat and even the artists and writers on Scion as we move that into its very first stage in its deal as a motion picture. This is a very talented group of people, so I'm not surprised all these great titles are coming out of one place."
