Sam Kieth, creator of The Maxx, Zero Girl and Four Women, has joined with IDW Publishing to release Art Of Sam Kieth, an overview of his entire comics career.

The 352-page, full-color retrospective collection of Kieth's art includes not only his creator-owned work but also scores of never-before-seen unpublished work, including examples of art Sam has done for Image (unpublished Maxx covers, art, first drawings of Maxx, Julie, Mr. Gone), and DC (including the first four sketches of the Sandman ever drawn), and various other publishers during his decades in the comics business. The book will also cover MTV's The Maxx animated series in detail.

"Why an art book about me? There are better artists, more talented, more detailed, imaginative, and more popular," Kieth said. "Okay, I am a vain sucker, but the real reason I agreed is because it's not just an art book. It's about all the phases I've been through: from black and white alternatives, up through the 'majors,' my own characters, the animated series, and even doing low budget flicks with Roger Corman. It's an odd little journey, isn't it?"

In addition to the artwork, the book includes interviews with Neil Gaiman, Jim Lee and virtually every other comic book professional Kieth has worked with over the last couple of decades. John Layman conducted the interviews and has written a text that complements the amount of artwork. There has never been a substantial collection of Kieth's artwork done before this, and very few books focusing on the career of a single artist with this much attention to detail.

"I cannot stress the size and scope of this book enough," Beau Smith, IDW's VP of Sales and Marketing, said. "Here at IDW Publishing we are bringing to Sam's art all the high quality production values for which we've become known, and which it deserves. This is the way Sam's art should be seen."

The book will cost $50 and will be available in July.

CrossGen Entertainment and Hurricane Entertainment have arranged for director John Carpenter, producer Debra Hill and actor Kurt Russell to sign copies of John Carpenter's Snake Plissken Chronicles as a special retailer incentive.

"Initially we offered a free copy of issue #1 signed by John Carpenter as a special incentive to the first 100 retailers who ordered 150 copies," said Jan Utstein-O'Neill, CEO of Hurricane Entertainment. "However, when we did a grass roots campaign, polling retailers on their response to the preview copies of Snake Plissken Chronicles that reached them just last week, we found that order activity would be higher than anticipated. Therefore, we would like to thank the retailing community by altering the incentive criteria. We have decided to entirely eliminate the 'only the first 100 retailers to order' requirement and lower the minimum order from 150 to just 90 copies. This will now allow the incentive to be available to smaller stores."

"We only recently found out from Debra that Kurt Russell himself would be pleased to sign copies to help draw attention to new stories starring Snake," explained series writer William O'Neill. "How cool is that? This has got to be a first for the comic-book industry."

"Snake Plissken is John Carpenter's favorite character that he created," said Hill. "He's also Kurt Russell's favorite to play, and my favorite to share with many generations of new fans."

John Carpenter's Snake Plissken Chronicles, phase one of a much larger Snake launch, is the result of a partnership between Hurricane Entertainment and Carpenter, Hill, and Russell. The debut of the comic book series will be followed by a new release of Escape From New York on DVD from MGM Home Video, with a plethora of bonus materials, including pages from the comic itself.

There will also be a series of novelizations, an anime feature from Production IG (producers of Ghost in the Shell), and a video game due out summer of 2005.

The complete set of incentives now includes:

* John Carpenter's Snake Plissken Chronicles #1, on sale June 25: Buy 90 (any combination of three covers) and get a free issue #1, Tone Rodriguez Cover, signed by director Carpenter.

* John Carpenter's Snake Plissken Chronicles #2, August release: Buy 60 (any combination of two covers) and get a free issue #1, Kurt Russell Photomontage, signed by Russell.

* John Carpenter's Snake Plissken Chronicles #3, October release: Buy 50 (any combination of two covers) and get a free issue #1, John Van Fleet cover, signed by Hill.

As a bonus, writer O'Neill and artist Rodriguez will also sign all of the free issues.
