SPIDER-MAN SEQUEL UPDATE
Tobey Maguire, star of the upcoming Spider-Man sequel, provided a progress report on the film's production. "We're two-thirds of the way through and we're having a good time. I'm really excited about it," Maguire told E! News Daily. Maguire was at the Santa Anita race track promoting his new movie, Seabiscuit, and interview were on the entertainment programs on Monday night. Maguire said reports that he was going to pull out of the Spider-Man sequel before production started were "totally blown out of promotion." "There was never a question of my desire to do the movie. There was never an issue of money," Maguire said. "I always wanted to do the film. I just wanted to make sure that I could fill the role that I was required to do. And once we determined that, everything was OK." Maguire was referring to a back problem he was having. "I've had some back pain in the past and there was definitely a little bit of a concern in terms of the level of stunts that I have to do for Spider-Man 2 is much greater than even in the first one. So myself and the studio, we wanted to make sure I could do it all, so I got in the harnesses and tested it out and it was OK." Maguire lost about 20 pounds to play a jockey in Seabiscuit and then had to bulk back up for Spider-Man 2. "I do it in a pretty safe way. I work with a nutritionist," Maguire said. In other Spider-Man 2 news, in addition to director Sam Raimi, The Continuum has learned that at least one cast member might possibly join him at Comic-Con International in San Diego on Saturday.
REMAINS FROM IDWIDW Publishing has scheduled a spring release for Remains, a new, five-issue horror mini-series by Steve Niles and Kieron Dwyer. Here's how IDW describes the concept: "In Las Vegas, it's sometimes hard to tell the regular people from zombies. But when Steve Niles, the modern master of horror comics, brings out Remains with artist Kieron Dwyer, the differences will become apparent." IDW's editor-in-chief Jeff Mariotte said, "The imagination of Steve Niles is a fertile and twisted wasteland from which the scariest ideas spring forth like flowers, or maybe mutated snails, after a heavy acid rain. Between him and the brilliant Kieron Dwyer, Remains is sure to become an instant terror classic." "I've been wanting to do two things for a while now; work with Kieron
and do a modern living dead story," Niles said. "Now, with Remains, I
get to do both. This is going to be a very sick ride."
ILLUMINATI ENTERTAINMENT'S PLANSIlluminati Entertainment has announced its plans for this year's Comic Con International in San Diego. Illuminati will be be selling copies of the inaugural Illuminati Sketchbook. Totaling 68 pages, the sketchbook includes artwork from all of the company's management clients, with much of that artwork coming from new creator-owned projects that they'll be formally announcing in coming months. The sketchbook is a limited edition of 500 copies, and is expected to sell out quickly. That isn't the only isn't the only sketchbook the company will have on hand. They'll also be selling standalone sketchbooks for most all of their clients-including some clients who won't be attending the convention. All monies generated by sales of these sketchbooks go directly to the artists, so fans buying their favorite artists' books will truly be supporting those artists. The company will also be announcing new creator-owned projects from some of their clients, including Dave Johnson and Ric Krause's Dark Ride, for which they'll be selling preview ashcans. Johnson is probably best known as the Eisner-winning cover artist of 100 Bullets and DC's sell-out hit Superman: Red Son, while Krause is a successful screenwriter who's sold Comeback to Fox 2000 and James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment and Black Box to Senator International and producer Mark Canton. Both Johnson and Krause will be on hand to sign copies. Another highlight of Illuminati's offerings will be signed copies of the premiere issue of Todd Dezago and Craig Rosseau's The Perhapanauts. Neither creator will be able to attend this year's convention, but Illuminati will be selling most of the remaining signed and numbered copies of the limited-edition debut at the convention-making it the last opportunity for many fans to purchase the issue.
