THE PUNISHER'S JONATHAN HENSLEIGH

Jonathan Hensleigh is not your ordinary first-time director. A veteran writer and producer, Hensleigh's credits include such blockbusters as Die Hard, The Rock, Con Air and Armageddon.

So even though Hensleigh's giving direction for the first time on Artisan Entertainment's The Punisher, the live-action adaptation of Marvel Comics' bad-ass vigilante, he brings a wealth of experience as the film's director and writer.

"He's been around the block a few times," says Thomas Jane, who stars in the title role, during The Continuum's recent visit to the set. "He's seen a lot of big movies. He's seen every aspect. It was just a matter of time before they actually gave him a camera.

SHI TO DARK HORSE

Just in time for the 10th anniversary of Billy Tucci's mini-series, Shi: The Way of the Warrior, Ana Ishikawa -- better known as Shi -- is returning. The avenging angel torn between two ways of life returns in Shi: Ju-Nen, a new limited series from Dark Horse Comics.

"I'm thrilled to have Ana and this mini-series at Dark Horse," Tucci said. "The success of their Shi statue, which sold out before its release, was amazing, and I think it's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg for what we will accomplish together.

"Mike Richardson and his team have just been amazing to work with, and since Shi has always been something of a dark horse in the comic-book world, I think it's a great fit."

Here's how the mini-series is described:

"Ten years have passed since Tucci first introduced us to the shadow war, which has raged for hundreds of years between the warrior monks of the Kyoto and Nara Sohei, direct descendants of Japan's greatest samurai. It was in that series that we met Ana Ishikawa, who set out on the path of revenge but found herself lost in a sea of conflict, much of it within her own soul.

"Things have changed in the last decade. The Narans have finally been defeated, and the Kyoto Sohei are about to rub it in -- with the encouragement of the Yakuza and with potentially disastrous consequences. Once again, Ana Ishikawa will don the guise of Shi, Death Incarnate, and try to prevent disaster."

Shi: Ju-Nen will be four issues.

DB PRO ADAPTS MAJIPOOR STORY

DB Production next spring will be adapting Robert Silverberg's short story "The Seventh Shrine," part of his Majipoor series, into an illustrated storybook format featuring paintings by European artist Anders Finer.

The book will be published under the title The Majipoor Chronicles: The Seventh Shrine and will be available at major bookstores worldwide.

"Working with a writer of the caliber of Mr. Silverberg is both an honor and a privilege," said Les Dabel, new business director and vice president of DB Pro. "We're tremendous fans of his writing, and wešre excited to see the world of Majipoor brought to life in such vivid detail."

"I'd never heard of Robert Silverberg prior to beginning this project," said Mike S. Miller, art director for DB Pro. "But since he was working as an editor for The Hedge Knight and I knew we'd be adapting his work soon, I read through The Seventh Shrine and Majipoor Chronicles. His writing in these books is simply amazing; it's rare that you'll find an author with the ability to craft stories with such depth and character.˛

"I've always relished the adventurous feeling of the Majipoor stories because the writing, with its expert style and language, works hard to place the reader in an alien world where violence and warfare are almost nonexistent," said Sean Jordan, managing editor for DB Pro. "The conflict is psychological, political, and cerebral before it ever gets physical.

"Of course, anyone who's read and enjoyed Frank Herbert's Dune, Arthur C. Clarke's Rama, Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, Isaac Asimov's Foundation or Gordon R. Dickson's Childe Cycle will also love the Majipoor series. "And fans of Star Wars and Star Trek will appreciate its depth and daring. I consider Mr. Silverberg to be one of the best and most prominent science fiction authors in history, and I'm confident readers who voyage into the world of Majipoor with us this spring will be captivated by what they see and discover.˛

The short story The Seventh Shrine was originally published in the science fiction anthology Legends, edited by Silverberg. The storybook edition will be available in through Devil's Due Publishing.
