SPIDER-MAN 2 MOVIE UPDATE

NECA again will be providing licensed products from the Spider-Man franchise. Randy Falk, director of product development, told The Continuum the company has secured Spider-Man 2 rights.

"We haven't shown anything yet," Falk told The Continuum last weekend at Wizard World Texas. "We'll debut product from the film in February."

Falk provided The Continuum an unofficial list of likely products, including bobbleheads, cookie jars, snow globes, lava lamps, lunch boxes and shot glasses.

"I think the sequel is going to be huge," Falk said. "I have complete faith in (director) Sam Raimi after the first film."

Falk said NECA will likely be producing merchandise for The Punisher movie.

"We'll probably be pretty involved with whatever Marvel is doing," Falk said.

In other Spider-Man movie news:

* Sources have told The Continuum that the first trailer will "likely" be shown before The Lord of The Rings: Return of the King. Fighting scenes between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus are said to be "phenomenal."

* More than 35 Spidey suits were made for the second film. The costume is tweaked slightly from the first movie, probably most noticable in the spider logos on the front and back.

* HBO will show Spider-Man again in January. Air dates and times include Thursday, Jan. 1 at 9 p.m.; Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 3 p.m. and midnight; Saturday, Jan. 10 at noon; Monday, Jan. 19 at 9 a.m. and 5:45 p.m.; and Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 12:45 p.m.

Both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety reported Tuesday that Michael Caine might be playing Alfred in the new Batman movie.

Caine would join Christian Bale, who's playing Bruce Wayne/Batman, in the Warner Bros. film.

Michael Gough had played Alfred in the four previous Batman films.

Production on the film, directed by Christopher Nolan and written by David Goyer, is expected to begin this spring.

PAUL DINI PREVIEWS JUSTICE LEAGUE

At a panel devoted to him at Wizard World Texas last weekend, Paul Dini previewed "Comfort and Joy," the Christmas-themed episode of Justice League written by him and scheduled to air Saturday, Dec. 13 on Cartoon Network.

"It was fun to do," Dini said after showing the episode. "It's a one-off, not the normal two-parter. It's interesting to see what they're like when they not off saving the Earth."

MIKE PLOOG ON ABADAZAD

CrossGen Entertainment on Monday announced that Abadazad #1 -- originally scheduled to contain only a handful of pages of art by Mike Ploog -- will now feature 31 pages penciled by the artist.

After many years in Hollywood as a designer and storyboard artist on films such as Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, Ploog is returning to comic books to pencil Abadazad, a new fantasy series tailor-made for his mastery of the incredible and the macabre. Created and written by writer J.M. DeMatteis, Abadazad tells the adventures of Kate, a troubled teenaged girl riddled with guilt over the shocking disappearance of her younger brother. Given a glimmer of hope that he may still be alive, Kate must undergo terrifying trials in a bizarre and surreal world she thought only existed in her brother's favorite novels.

"J.M.'s wonderful story has all the ingredients of a 21st Century classic: magic, mystery, and suspense," Ploog said. "Abadazad works on many different levels as J.M. cleverly moves the action along in an amazingly brisk and entertaining manner. That leaves me with the foreboding task of bringing his rich characters to life. Fortunately, J.M. is very articulate and we've formed an exciting partnership."

"More Ploog is never a bad thing," DeMatteis said. "And having seen some of Mike's gorgeous, textured pencil-work for the first issue, I am delighted beyond words that Abadazad is now -- to paraphrase the radio DJ's of my childhood -- All Ploog, All The Time."
