SABRINA GETS MANGA MAKEOVER

Archie Comics' Sabrina the Teenage Witch is getting a manga makeover, courtesy of writer/artist Tania del Rio and beginning with Sabrina the Teenage Witch #58.

"We felt the time was right to think outside the comic panel, so to speak," said Archie Comics chairman and co-publisher Michael Silberkleit. "We're thrilled at the opportunity to contribute to this young artist's future and give her a chance to shine in her chosen field."

Del Rio's Sabrina gig came after her story "Lovesketch," in the book Rising Stars of Manga, Vol. 2, published by Tokyopop.

"I want to do comics geared toward entertaining girls," said del Rio. "Not a bad influence, but not talking down to them, either. Sabrina is a very clever character who has a lot of inner magic in addition to her obvious, surface powers."

"Sabrina has always been a bit more esoteric than our other characters," said managing editor Victor Gorelick. "In her early years, the artists experimented with different looks for her."

Sabrina the Teenage Witch #58 will arrive in stores on June 14.

DC COMICS EXCLUSIVES

DC Comics on Tuesday announced that artists Michael Lark and Marcelo Frusin have extended their exclusive agreements.

Lark, the artist of Gotham Central, has signed a one-year renewal.

"I'm ecstatic that Michael will continue to man the front desk of Gotham Central," said editor Matt Idelson. "He's a huge part of the reason this book has garnered the critical accolades that it has! And if you thought the Joker story was intense, wait'll you see what he's drawing now. It'll blow you away!"

"This is my eighth year working exclusively with DC, and I couldn't be happier about it," Lark said. "I've had nothing but good experiences in the past, and I fully expect that to be the case for the coming year as well. I'm really excited to be devoting my attentions to every issue of the Gotham Central monthly for the foreseeable future, and I'm also thrilled about the upcoming trade paperback."

Frusin, illustrator of Vertigo's Hellblazer, has extended his exclusive agreement with DC for three years.

"We couldn't be happier that Marcelo has decided to accept our offer and renew his exclusive contract," said editor Will Dennis. "He is doing amazing work on Hellblazer that's really defined that character for the current generation of readers. Marcelo has grown tremendously as an artist in the past few years because he is constantly challenging himself. I consider him the most underrated artist in comics, and I can't wait to change that in the near future. He's going to blow people away with all the things we have planned."

"I'm really honored because of the generosity and affection that DC has treated me during this years,"Frusin said. "I couldn't imagine a better place to continue my career. I thank the extraordinary people of Vertigo for the absolute freedom they give me to draw one of their most loved characters, John Constantine. I also look forward to drawing some of DC's other characters."

BRIEFLY

  • Kids' WB! has released a new promotional image from the Astro Boy animated series, which debuts on Saturday, Jan. 17.

  • Diamond is reporting that Top Cow and Image Comics¹ Wanted #1 has completely sold out of its print run through the distributor. The title debuted into retail stores nationwide last Wednesday.

Writer Mark Millar said, "When (Jim) McLauchlin called and said we'd done JLA numbers on the first issue I was as freaked out as I was excited because I didn't know if the retailer confidence on this book would extend to the readers too. It wasn't until Diamond announced a complete sell-out that I could properly relax and enjoy the fact that we seem to have something of an enormous hit on our hands and the huge initial orders are just the beginning.²

"We're damn pleased at the reception this book has received, although not surprised, as we're fortunate to have the finest creative team in comics on this," said McLauchlin, Top Cow's editor-in-chief. "And honestly, #1 is just the warm-up. The surprises at the end of both #2 and #3 will jar the hell out of readers. And there's a new character in #2, not even glimpsed in #1, who will scare the pants offa ya."

Currently, Top Cow is evaluating whether to go back to press for a 2nd printing of issue #1. Wanted #2 is scheduled to hit the stands on Jan. 7.

  • Ian McKellen, who played Magneto in both X-Men movies, will be a guest on NBC's Late Night with Conan O'Brien on Friday, Dec. 26.

  • The 12th Printing of The Death of Superman TP from DC Comics features a newly redesigned cover, with art from the historic cover to Superman #75 by Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding. The new cover also includes a blurb that reads, "The Best-Selling Graphic Novel of All Time!"
