HELLBOY MOVIE UPDATE

Dark Horse will release Hellboy: The Art of the Movie, a 200-page book, on March 3, a month before the film's April 2 release.

The book features writer/director Guillermo del Toro's complete screenplay (based on creator Mike Mignola's Hellboy: Seed of Destruction), production art by Mignola, Wayne Barlowe and Ty Ellingson as well as commentary by Mignola and excerpts from del Toro's on-set diary.

"It's not one of those Disney art of books, that has a lot of b.s. paintings that were just hanging around the studio," Mignola said during the recent Wizard World Texas panel devoted to the film. "This has real, nuts-and-bolts making-of stuff. There's a lot of production designers' paintings, a lot of schematics and mechanical stuff.

"There's a lot in there on how the movie really was made, instead of a pretty fluff piece that really doesn't tell you anything."

Del Toro said the book will be reflective of a small-but-efficient art staff that worked in what he said was a "summer camp" atmosphere.

"I listen to all of them," del Toro. "We have lunch together, we go to the movies together, we order pizza and watch Shadow of the Vampire. All the guys know each other and like each other."

"It was a very streamlined way of doing things," Mignola added.

"That's the reason the book will be very lean, but I hope very useful," del Toro said.

Hellboy: The Art of the Movie will cost $24.95.

In other Hellboy news:

* Del Toro said Hellboy has been a fun experience, particularly with the hands-off approach Revolution Studios has had. "It was like the biggest independent movie ever made -- with a red guy," del Toro said.

* Diamond Select will be releasing bean-bag toys from the film, based on Hellboy, Abe Sapien and Sammael.
