X-MEN: EVOLUTION DVD

X-Men: Evolution -- Powers Revealed, the sixth volume in the DVD series based on the animated series, will be released by Warner Home Video on Tuesday.

The DVD will feature four episodes from the second season of the show, which ran four seasons on Kids' WB! and is currently airing on Cartoon Network.

"The Evolution series was originally created to adapt our X-Men characters for a younger demographic, but due to the great storylines and engaging characters that appear in each episode, we have found a much wider fan base," said Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige. "These X-Men tales are sure to please even the most ardent X-Men fans."

Episodes on the DVD include:

"The Beast of Bayville" In an attempt to quell his growing animal instincts, Bayville High teacher Hank McCoy tests a serum on himself, and unleashes the beast within.

"Adrift" During Scott's visit to Hawaii, he manages to rescue his brother Alex, who has been pulled out to sea on his surfboard during a terrible storm.

"On Angel's Wings" A new mutant named Angel, with designs to become a guardian angel for all those in need, appears in New York during the Christmas holiday. Although his intentions are honorable, his actions bring unwanted attention.

"African Storm" Just as Evan's slacker attitude prompts the decision to send him back to his parents, Storm's state of mind is questioned when she hallucinates that ghostly shadows are haunting her. Or perhaps she's not hallucinating...

DVD features include Stan Lee: The Original X-Man, Inside Xavier's Institute hosted by Wolverine, Character Bios and X-Men: Evolution trailer.

MARVEL, ELECTRONIC ARTS TEAM UP

Electronic Arts and Marvel Enterprises announced on Friday that they have entered into an agreement, whereby EA will develop a new generation of fighting video games pitting super heroes from the Marvel Universe against a new, original set of EA heroes.

Under the multi-year agreement, EA has been granted a license to develop and distribute fighting games featuring the Marvel Super Heroes. Additionally, EA has granted Marvel the exclusive rights as worldwide licensing agent for all consumer products and media licensing for the new EA heroes. Marvel will publish new comic books introducing the EA characters. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for EA to create new characters for fighting games that can be exploited through our global merchandise licensing machine to fuel sales in many other product categories," said Allen Lipson, President and CEO of Marvel Enterprises.

"It's a unique opportunity, partnering with Marvel to bring their renowned Super Heroes into original videogame environments, as well as providing us an opportunity to create new heroes that will live in games, comic books and other licensing or media opportunities that Marvel presents," said John Riccitiello, President and COO for Electronic Arts.

"Fans of both traditional Marvel comics as well as video games have a lot to be excited about as they will be able to fight it out between established Marvel Super Heroes and EA's new heroes in original scenarios."

DARK HORSE TO BUY STUDIO PROTEUS

Dark Horse Comics has announced it will purchase manga publishing and production house Studio Proteus under a pending agreement.

Dark Horse has worked with Studio Proteus co-publishing manga since the publication of Dark Horse's Outlanders in 1988, and together they have produced nearly 60,000 pages of material. The acquisition will also include all Studio Proteus manga previously published with Eclipse and Innovation. Studio Proteusą Toren Smith will retain the company's name.

"We have had a fantastic run with Toren Smith and Studio Proteus," said Mike Richardson, Dark Horse President. "With the assistance of Studio Proteus we have presented some of the finest manga properties ever produced, including Lone Wolf and Cub, Akira, Oh My Goddess, Blade of the Immortal, and Ghost in the Shell, among others. We look forward to Toren's assistance on future manga projects."

"Manga sales have exploded over the last five years," Smith said. "We've seen 20 percent and 30 percent growth each year. Frankly, the manga marketplace has gotten too big for a little guy like me to handle. I felt it was best that the business end of things transfer over to a company with the resources and experience to deal with this large and challenging new market."

Smith will not be leaving manga behind. "I'm not sure I could handle the withdrawal symptoms," he joked. "I'll be translating select titles for Dark Horse, such as Blade of the Immortal, and working with them as a consultant."

  • Following the release of last fall's remastered Hopeless Savages trade paperback, Oni Press has announced that when the second volume of the series, Hopeless Savages: Ground Zero, goes back to press, it will be updated as well. It will be resized to fit the new Oni standard and be given a new cover by Christine Norrie and colorist Guy Major.

"The main thing is to create a line of books that follow the same design template," Oni editor Jamie S. Rich said. "With all the covers by Christine and Guy and a more uniform trade dress, we'll be taking a step in the right direction. The new size also makes the book even more appealing to the burgeoning manga market."

Other than that, the contents will remain exactly the same. Written by Jen Van Meter and illustrated by Bryan Lee O'Malley, the second series focused on Zero, the youngest Hopeless-Savage, and her burgeoning teenage love life. Special flashback sequences were also drawn by Norrie, Andi Watson and Chynna Clugston-Major, with chapter breaks by Terry Dodson.

The new edition of Hopeless Savages: Ground Zero will arrive in comics stores in early March. It will be 128 black-and-white pages and will cost $11.95.
