SPIDER-MAN MOVIE/TV NEWS

Marvel Studios' Avi Arad said that Spider-Man 2 is more of a continuation than a sequel.

"We see all our characters two years later," Arad said during the recent Wizard World Los Angeles. "It's a bigger, better, more emotional story. We are very fortunate the same team stayed together. It's been five years with (director) Sam Raimi and (producer) Laura Ziskin and James (Franco) and Tobey (Maguire) and Kirsten (Dunst). I think we all hear the voices better.

"What you saw in the last frame of movie one, this incredible Spider-Man going up the flagpole -- we set goals for ourselves, where we want to take the movie -- we had to do much better than that."

Arad said Spider-Man 2 is a continuation from a production standpoint as well.

"We finished the first one and we started on the second one, like we are now working on the third one," he said.

VAN HELSING COMIC, IMAGES

Dark Horse will release a Van Helsing one-shot, based upon the upcoming Universal Pictures film starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale, on May 7.

The comic is written by Joshua Dysart, with art by J. Alexander.

Here's how Dark Horse describes the one-shot:

"What evil lurks beneath the Paris streets? Who stalks the sewers of the City of Light? Van Helsing may be the only man who can solve this mystery. Only he can end the reign of terror that plagues the city. Taking place within the Van Helsing film's chronology, Dark Horse Comics' Van Helsing one-shot begins with the title character's descent into the sewers and ends only when he discovers the mystery behind the predator who lurks there.

"Van Helsing is a 19th century hero, fighting the supernatural manifestations of chaos and evil," Dysart said. "(Editor) Scott Allie and I knew we had to pack in as much classic cinema horror reference that 22 pages could stand if we were to remain true to the property, so that's how we approached the narrative. While the film uses virtually all of the classic Universal monsters, I was able incorporate some cool villains not seen in the film for the comic book."

Said Allie: "The really high level of energy and inventiveness Stephen Sommers was committed to bringing to the film were inspirations for Joshua and Jason, who really strove to match those standards."

IMAGE'S PVP GOES MONTHLY

Scott Kurtz's PvP, published by Image Comics, will be moving from a bi-monthly to a monthly schedule beginning in July.

The move, starting with PvP #9, follows the June release of the first PVP trade paperback, which collects the first six issues.

Kurtz's online comic strip revolves around the staff of a gaming magazine (including a big blue troll intern named Skull) and their day-to-day adventures. Each issue of PvP collects 22 pages of strips in the same "sideways" landscape format as Frank Cho's Liberty Meadows.

"I can't believe I just finished my first year with Image Comics," said Kurtz. "I was so terrified the market wouldn't support a black-and-white humor book that Frank Cho didn't draw, but lo and behold, sales have been great and reaction has been overwhelming. Retailers and fans alike have been asking me to go monthly, and I finally feel secure enough to take that plunge."

"We're couldn't be happier for Scott and PvP," said Image managing editor Eric Stephenson, "and we're excited that the comic has been able to build its readership from its early days on the Web. That's not an easy feat for a humor book in today's market."

Kurtz said PvP has given him a personal creative outlet without forcing him to make editorial concessions.

"Image has fulfilled my dream of being a newspaper cartoonist but, unlike the syndicates, they aren't demanding my soul in return," Kurtz said. "When people read PvP, I want them to remember the days when they looked forward to reading the funny pages. Just like the comics page, every issue of PvP is a great jumping-on point."

PvP #9 goes on sale July 21.
