SPIDER-MAN 2 UPDATE

Star Tobey Maguire attended the media screening for Spider-Man 2 in Hollywood on Friday night with his friends.

"My buddies whom I've known, one of them for 10 years and the other for 14 years, and they could give a pffft about any of this (Hollywood attention)," Maguire said. "They just wanted to see the film -- and they liked it."

The film actually drew cheers twice from the media audience, once during an important line from Mary Jane and then at the film's end. An informal poll indicated that most felt the sequel was a better movie than the first Spider-Man film.

In other Spider-Man news:

* Kirsten Dunst, who plays Mary Jane Watson, will appear in Spider-Man 3, but said that would be her final appearance in the series. "I just think three's a good number," she said. "I don't think you should push a good thing too much."

* Hal Sparks, one-time Talk Soup host who is a regular on Showtime's Queer as Folk, has a short appearance as an elevator passenger in one of the film's funniest moments.

* Aasif Mandvi plays Mr. Azia, Peter Parker's boss at the pizza parlor who was shown in the trailer complaining about Peter always being late.

* Look for more Spider-Man 2 news on Monday here in The Continuum.

CSI: NY COMIC BOOK

In fall, New York City joins Las Vegas and Miami in the line-up of CSI teams on CBS television. IDW Publishing, which has released comic books and graphic novels based on both previous series, will join in with its first CSI: New York release, written by Max Allan Collins.

"CSI has been a linchpin of our publishing program from the beginning," said IDW Editor-in-Chief Jeff Mariotte. "CSI: New York looks like a terrific addition to the line-up, and we look forward to telling new adventures of Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise), Stella Bonasera (Melina Kanakaredes) and their team."

Collins is known for his original graphic novel Road to Perdition, adapted into the movie starring Tom Hanks, and has written most of the previous CSI comic books and novels.

"Having done both Vegas and Miami in various forms -- novels, video games, and so on -- I was hoping I'd get asked to be part of the new NYC franchise," Collins said. "The grittiness that venue provides can give us a whole new take on the CSI format, and my forensics researcher Matt Clemens and I are already cooking up grisly fare for this new team of CSIs."

MORE ANIMATED STAR WARS

Cartoon Network has announced five nights of a brand-new Star Wars: Clone Wars mini-series from animator Genndy Tartakovsky beginning March 21.

While the original episodes of Star Wars: Clone Wars were just three minutes long, each installment of the new Clone Wars animated mini-series, which has yet to be titled, will be 12 minutes as they lead into the long-awaited Star Wars: Episode III, which is scheduled for release in theaters on May 19.

Tartakovsky who produced the first micro-series, will serve as director, co-screenwriter and executive producer of the new Star Wars: Clone Wars animated mini-series. Cartoon Network will air the new mini-series from March 21 to March 25 with limited commercial interruptions.

"We were really impressed with the quality of the animation and the storytelling abilities that Cartoon Network and Genndy brought to the first Star Wars: Clone Wars episodes, and clearly viewers were, too, because the feedback we received about the micro-series was fantastic," said Howard Roffman, President, Lucas Licensing. "This new mini-series will bring even more depth and excitement to the story of the Clone Wars and will lead viewers right into the adventures of  Star Wars: Episode III."

Star Wars: Clone Wars features such characters as Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padmé Amidala, Mace Windu and Anakin Skywalker in the ongoing battle of the Army of the Republic against a vast uprising spearheaded by the Separatists and their massive droid armies.  The new mini-series will include an expanded role for a brand-new villain, General Grievous, military leader of all the Separatist armies, who will play a pivotal role in Star Wars: Episode III.

Star Wars: Clone Wars is being produced at Cartoon Network Studios by a team led by Tartakovsky.

BRIEFLY

  • The creative team of Image Comics' The Black Forest, writers Todd Livingston and Robert Tinnell and artist Neil Vokes, have signed a licensing agreement with ReelArt Studios to produce two 1/6th scale, prepainted cold cast resin statues based on the heroes and villains of their graphic novel.

The first statue will be a multiple figure bust featuring the heroes---Jack Shannon, the dashing young aviator; Archie Caldwell, the intrepid stage magician; and the Frankenstein Monster. The paint scheme will follow the black and white wash look of Neil Vokes' artwork.

Sculptor Shawn Nagle will be basing his dead on design skills on conceptual action sketches provided by the artist. While each statue will work as a stand alone piece, when viewed collectively, they will comprise a battle scene.
