DESPERADO PUBLISHING JOINS IMAGE COMICS

Image Comics on Thursday announced the addition of Desperado Publishing to its publshing lineup.

Desperado was created by writer/editor Joe Pruett, who has assembled a collection of talent to publish under the brand, including Brian Bolland, P. Craig Russell, Bob Burden, Paul Jenkins, Phil Hester, John McCrea, Tony Harris, Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, Andrew Robinson, Bernie Wrightson and Brian Stelfreeze.

"Image Comics has always offered a creator-friendly environment," Pruett said. "My experiences with Image has always been outstanding and I believe that this partnership will be mutually beneficial to both parties. Our goals are similar in that we both believe in total creative freedom and control by the respective creators. Desperado gets the benefit of Image's resources and positioning, while Image gets the benefit of the quality of talent we'll be bringing to the table."

The first book will be the return of Burden's Flaming Carrot. The first issue of a brand new ongoing quarterly series will hit shops in December.

Also debuting in December is the Desperado Primer, which will give readers a chance to sample the array of Desperado talent for an introductory price of $1.99. The book also features two original stories. The first story, written by Jenkins, features artists Stelfreeze, Hester, Adam Hughes, Cully Hamner, Kelsey Shannon and Jason Pearson. The second tale is a prologue to Tony Harris' upcoming Roundeye, featuring story and art by Harris.

The cover is by Bolland.

"This is truly an exciting time for both Desperado Publishing and Image Comics," Pruett said. "I think the time is right for a return to high-profile creator-owned titles and projects. Superheroes continue to dominate the marketplace like never before, but if we as an industry want to push this medium to the next level we need to follow the blueprints in Europe and Japan.

"There's room out there for every type of story, not just superhero comics. Don't get me wrong. I love superhero comics, but there needs to be more variety, just as there is in the literary world. Desperado is about offering choices. Thanks to Image, we'll be able to offer those choices to a larger audience."
