Wednesday, September 8, 2004MARVEL'S RYDER CUP STORYSports Illustrated and Marvel Comics have partnered to develop original content for Sports Illustrated's Golf Plus Ryder Cup Preview. For the magazine's first Ryder Cup special issue, SI and Marvel have created a two-page cover that features U.S. Ryder Cup captain Hal Sutton flanked by Captain America and other heroes, and an original 5-page gatefold comic in which the Marvel characters help the U.S. squad come up with a game plan to regain the Cup. The issue, dated Sept. 14, will be distributed to more than 750,000 Sports Illustrated Golf Plus readers. The Ryder Cup takes place Sept. 17-19. The comic will play off of Sutton's patriotism as he brings in The Avengers, led by Captain America, to teach the U.S. members how to perfect their skills and work as a team. Many of the PGA Tour's most popular pros will be immortalized in comic book style alongside the ever-popular Super Heroes. Tiger Woods will receive tips on his swing from the world-renowned web swinger himself, Spider-Man. Iron-Man will provide the PGA Tour pros with tips on maximizing equipment while Thor will focus on the grip. Also included in the section will be a side story that depicts Phil Mickelson teaching The Hulk how to play golf -- a lesson that goes awry and forces the heroes to caddie for the Tour players. The project is written by Paul Jenkins, with art by Paco Medina. Click on the thumbnails below for larger looks.
