CAL MCDONALD RETURNS TO IDW

Supernatural Freak Machine: A Cal McDonald Mystery, a full-color, six-part mini-series, debuts in March from IDW Publishing.

Cal McDonald, the creation of writer Steve Niles, previously appeared at IDW in novel form. Niles penned three Cal prose books, Savage Membrane, Guns, Drugs and Monsters and Dial M for Monster.

Now Niles is bringing Cal's comic-book exploits home to IDW, too, in the form of Supernatural Freak Machine: A Cal McDonald Mystery.

Here's how IDW describes the book:

"This time out, Cal and his ghoulish partner Mo'Lock face a prison break that signals the return of Dr. Polynice, last heard from in Savage Membrane. Throughout the course of the story, Cal also gets himself a new ride... or does the ride get its latest victim? That remains to be seen."

Niles once again teams up with artist Kelley Jones. "What I've always wanted with Cal was an artist, a partner who gets him," Niles said. "I have that now with Kelley Jones and I can't wait to see where Cal McDonald winds up."

ONI'S HYSTERIA INCENTIVES

Oni Press has announced free giveaways for retailers that pre-order Hysteria Volume 2 -- One Man Gang, the new book by Mike Hawthorne.

During the creation of the graphic novel Mike Hawthorne has created tons of developmental art, which will be collected in a mini-sketchbook. Each sketchbook will feature 20 pages of promotional and developmental art, as well as two full-color illustrations (including the original, unused cover for the book). In addition, the artist will be personalizing each one with a small sketch on the inside front cover.

Retailers will receive one of the personalized sketchbooks for every five copies of Hysteria Volume 2 -- One Man Gang they pre-order.

Hawthorne is also creating an original, signed and numbered, screen print for those that order three copies of the book.

The print runs of the Sketchbook and the Prints will be determined by the initial pre-orders, and no more will be made. Retailers will be the only people these items will be available to.

The book will be released in March.

FRANK QUITELY EXCLUSIVE TO DC

Artist Frank Quitely has signed a two-year exclusive contract with DC Comics. Following his work with writer Grant Morrison on the current Vertigo mini-series WE3, Quitely will team up with Morrison again in 2005 for the 12-issue maxi-series All Star: Superman.

"My relationship with DC has never been better," Quitely said. "First The Sandman: Endless Nights, then We3, and next 12 issues of All Star: Superman with Grant Morrison! I couldn't be happier about being exclusive."

"Frank's an artist's artist and an editor's dream," said Karen Berger, VP - Executive Editor, Vertigo. "His mastery of the form, his impeccable style and his sense of detail have made him one of the most acclaimed and popular comics illustrators working today. We couldn't be happier having him exclusively to ourselves, and very much look forward to seeing more of his incredible work."

"Frank is one of comics' truly exceptional talents, and he's been gone from the DCU too long," said Dan DiDio, VP - Executive Editor, DCU. "We couldn't think of a better project, or a better hero, or a better writer for him to work with than All Star: Superman."
