BILL MORRISON TALKS HEROES ANONYMOUS

Bill Morrison and Scott Gimpel are writing the pilot for Heroes Anonymous, a television series at Sci Fi based on the Bongo Comics series they created.

Produced by NBC Universal Television Studio and Bender-Brown Prods, the series will be executive produced by Lawrence Bender (Kill Bill Vol. 1&2, Pulp Fiction), Kevin Brown (Legend of Earthsea, Roswell) and Karl Schaefer (The Dead Zone).

"My partner Scott Gimple and I met with Kevin Brown and Janet Jeffries at Lawrence Bender's production company and we pitched themthe idea of doing a Heroes Anonymous TV series," Morrison told The Continuum. "They loved it, so we worked out the nuts and bolts of how we wanted to translate the comic into a series and then pitched it to The Sci Fi Channel."

Here's how Sci Fi describes the show:

"This live-action one-hour series lives in the world of The Incredibles and Spider-Man -- a modern-day big city where superheroes are a part of everyday life. Heroes Anonymous follows a group of twentysomething aspiring superheroes that form a support group to help them cope with the nearly impossible task of trying to discover their own identity, while carving out their secret identity."

Why does Morrison think Heroes Anonymous will translate to television?

"Because anybody will be able to relate to the characters and the problems they're dealing with," he told The Continuum. "You won't have to be a comic book fan to get into this show and the lives of the characters. Yes, they're super heroes, but the drama and comedy will come from the fact that they are dealing with the problems that we all face in life."

Morrison, who will also be producing, said casting won't happen until after the pilot script is completed.

SMALLVILLE UPDATE

Annette O'Toole, who plays Martha Kent in Smallville, gets a chance to show off her comedic skills in "Spirit," this Wednesday's new episode of The WB.

In the episode, Dawn (guest-star Beatric Rosen), a wannabe prom queen, crashes her car into a ditched filled with meteor rocks, causing her spirit to exit her body. In her quest for the crown, Dawn takes over the bodies of others to attempt to land the title.

The first body she takes over is Martha's. As the Dawn-controlled Martha, O'Toole becomes a teenager who eats ice cream for dinner while singing an Ashlee Simpson song.

The episode also features a performance by Lifehouse at the prom.

BRIEFLY

* Sin City placed fourth at the box office over the weekend with an estimated $6.7 million, pushing its total to $61.3 million.

* Diamond Distributors has released its actual sales charts for March. To view the charts, CLICK HERE.

* Image Comics has announced a sell-out of Sea of Red #1. In response, a trade collecting the first four issue of Sea of Red is being rushed to press to coincide with the release of Sea of Red #5. The collection, No Grave But the Sea, will retail for $8.95, and will be in stores on July 27.

"The response to Sea of Red has been amazing," said creator Rick Remender. "It's gratifying to see it as one of the best reviewed books of the year. We all did our best to make this a well-drawn, genre-defying, high seas-horror story with real characters. With the entire run from issue one now sold out, it seems to have paid off."

* Image also has announced sell-outs of Invincible #20 and #21.

"Invincible is the little book that could," writer/creator Robert Kirkman said. "We were close to cancellation a year ago and since then (it) has fought its way back up and is now selling better with every issue. I couldn't be happier with its success. Invincible is my love letter to superhero comics. It's everything I'd want to do all thrown into one book. The way things are going it looks like I'll be able to write Invincible for a very long time and nothing could make me happier."

* Robert Englund is providing the voice of The Riddler in The Batman animated series.

* Coming Tuesday: DC news and much more!!!
