MAN-THING'S HANS RODIONOFF

Man-Thing, a live-action movie based on the Marvel Comics character, makes its premiere in an edited-for-television format on Saturday at 9 p.m. on Sci Fi Channel.

The film, directed by Brett Leonard and shot in Australia, last year, was originally targeted as a theatrical release, but instead will go straight to DVD on June 14, with its R-rated version.

The Continuum caught up with Hans Rodionoff, who wrote the Man-Thing movie and the comics series prequel, for a quick Q&A session.

The Continuum: How did the gig come about?

Rodionoff: I went in and met with the team at Marvel when they read my screenplay, Lovecraft. We started talking about the Marvel horror titles of the 70's and our conversation drifted toward Man-Thing. From there, I went to meet with some executives at Artisan. I think they had heard several takes by then, and everyone had been pitching them stories about Ted Sallis and the Nexus of All Realities, so my story stood out primarily because it was different.

The Continuum: How would you describe the film?

Rodionoff: I'd describe it as a throwback horror flick, an homage to Frankenheimer's Prophecy and Legend of Boggy Creek.

The Continuum: Did you read the 1970s comics and how influential were they in crafting the story?

Rodionoff: I read my way through the entire first run of the comic book, the one that started in 1974. I didn't really get into the 1978 run though, and to me the '74 run with Mike Ploog's art is the definitive Man-Thing. Those books were very influential on me because they created a distinct atmosphere of dread. I tried to bring that atmosphere into my screenplay.

The Continuum: Was it a big disappointment that the film didn't make theaters?

Rodionoff: Man-Thing has been a disappointment to me in a number of ways, but the non-theatrical release is the least of them. Under the circumstances, I think it's a good thing that it's premiering on the Sci-Fi Channel.

The Continuum: What did you think of Man-Thing's look in the film?

Rodionoff: I always thought it should look like the classic Man-Thing, with the orbital red eyes and the three trunk/tendrils hanging off his face. I'm not quite sure why its look changed.

The Continuum: Has there been talk of doing any more Man-Thing, either in film or comics?

Rodionoff: The Man-Thing mini-series comic did well, but I think the idea of more film or comic incarnations will depend on how the movie does.

The Continuum: Do you have other projects in the works at Marvel?

Rodionoff: I had a great time working with the Marvel team on Man-Thing and Werewolf by Night. We've been trying to find a way to work together again. It's just a matter of finding the right project.
