SMALLVILLE RETURNS

Smallville will return for a fifth season in a new time period on The WB, the network announced on Tuesday.

Beginning next season, the show will air on Thursdays at 8 p.m.

"This season, we're making a bold statement on Thursday nights by moving one of our signature hits, Smallville, to 8:00," said David Janollari, The WB's entertainment president. "The show faced some of the toughest competition of any series on television this season, going up against Lost every week, yet it continued to deliver great ratings."

Here's how the network describes the new season:

"Smallville is coming off a great year that continued to explore the mythology of the early days of the Clark Kent character. More exciting pieces of the puzzle will be revealed next season when Clark finds himself transported to the Fortress of Solitude. Starring Tom Welling as the Kansas farm boy who grows up to be Superman, the series is The WB's number one show with men 18-34 and third highest-rated series in adults 18-34."

Returning cast members include Tom Welling, Kristin Kreuk, Michael Rosenbaum, Allison Mack, John Glover, Annette O'Toole and John Schneider. The network did not mention what will happen with Erica Durance's role as Lois Lane.

In a related note, Jensen Ackles, a fourth-season cast member of Smallville, will be featured in a new series on the network, Supernatural.

BATMAN BEGINS UPDATE

Batman Begins star Katie Holmes and a clip from the film were spotlighted on Entertainment Tonight on Monday.

In the clip, Holmes' Rachel Dawes fends off muggers and then turns to see Batman. She fires her taser at him, to no effect.

"Who are you?" she asks Batman.

"Someone like you," Batman replies. "Someone who will rattle the cages."

Said Holmes, "I'm a little more serious in this movie than I am in real life."

CAPOTE IN KANSAS

Oni Press has announced a July 7 release for Capote in Kansas, an original graphic novel by Ande Parks and Chris Samnee. Like Parks' Union Station, this 128-page all-new story focuses on the effect that real life crime has on individuals' lives.

Here's how the book is described:

"In 1959, Truman Capote traveled to Holcomb, Kansas to write a book about a pair of killers. The relationship that grew between he and the two men was something he never anticipated, and the result was arguably his most powerful work, In Cold Blood. Heralded as groundbreaking, his 'nonfiction novel' got inside the minds of the killers and the sad, disturbing reality of murder. But at what cost did his masterpiece come? In his own fictionalized account, Parks turns his eye to the story behind the story."

Parks said, "I felt this book offered a really interesting challenge. I needed to tell the story of the creation of a great piece of art without re-telling Capote's book. Believe me; Truman has already done the Clutter murder case and its aftermath. Rehashing the crime would be a waste of time.

"That's not to say that Capote in Kansas doesn't touch upon the horror of the crimes, but this is not a crime book. It is a portrait of a great artist creating a great work of art, and a study of the sacrifices he had to make to do so. Truman himself said that he would never have stopped in Kansas if he had known what was in store for him there. In Cold Blood cost him six years, along with, arguably, his artistic soul."

The book will cost $11.95.
