SMALLVILLE UPDATE

Aquaman and Brainiac and headed for Smallville in the show's fifth season.

Executive producer Al Gough confirmed for The Continuum that Aquaman will appear in the show's fourth episode of the upcoming season, following such established DC characters as The Flash and Perry White.

Announced by The WB at its TCA event, James Marsters, best known as Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, will be playing college professor Milton Fine, alter ego of Brainiac.

Here's how the network describes his character:

"Possessed of a vast, superior knowledge limited only by his hubris and emotions, Brainiac comes to earth armed with a secret about Clark's biological family and the truth about Krypton's demise. Brainiac's presence in Smallville will have a devastating effect on Clark and Lex's already deteriorating friendship."

Another fifth-season episode of Smallville will reunite John Schneider (Jonathan Kent) with his former Dukes of Hazzard co-star Tom Wopat. Wopat will portray a state senator who was a boyhood friend of Jonathan Kent.

Schneider is shown the left at The WB's All Stars event on Friday.

The fifth season will premiere on The WB on Thursday, Sept. 29.

In other Smallville news, Warner Home Video has released the back cover art for Smallville: The Complete Fourth Season, which arrives on DVD on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Click on the thumbnail for a larger image.

FRESHMEN #1 SOLD OUT

Freshmen #1, the first issue in Top Cow Productions' new college-meets-superpowers series, has sold out. The issue hit stands July 13, and was sold out at the distributor level the day after.

Freshmen is the co-creation of actor Seth Green and writer Hugh Sterbakov. It's a comedic tale of incoming college freshmen gaining wild and untamed superpowers.

"I couldn't be more excited. This is a real thrill. I love that people are reading and loving the book," said Seth Green.

Both Green and Sterbakov are lifelong comic fans and collectors, enjoying their first chance to create in the comics field.

"This is a huge honor for me," Sterbakov said. "As a longtime comic book fan, I'm blown away that my first comic has exceeded expectations. I hope the readers enjoy these characters as much as I have, and I can't wait to get the next issue in their hands so they can see where the story is really going!"

According to Top Cow, it will monitor the market and canvas retailers for feedback to determine if a second printing is necessary.

Look for more on The Freshmen soon here in The Continuum.
