SUPERGIRL COVERS BY MICHAEL TURNER

Confirming comments made by Michael Turner at Wizard World Chicago, DC Comics announced Tuesday that Turner will continue contributing to the return of the Girl of Steel with variant covers for Supergirl #2-4.

The covers will be shipped to retailers in a 50/50 split between Turner covers and covers by regular series artists Ian Churchill and Norm Rapmund.

"I'm just as surprised as everyone who is reading this that Michael is continuing to give our book a boost with his gorgeous covers," said writer Jeph Loeb. "DC has clearly gotten behind Supergirl to create enormous excitement. Both Ian and Mike are doing dazzling things and as we all know, launching a new title is very daunting -- particularly with a female lead.

"It's not about sales; for me it's never about sales. It'ss about our team: myself, (Group Editor) Eddie Berganza, Ian, Mike, Norm Rapmund, Richard Starkings and the brilliance of the Aspen color crew, all working our tails off to create the best book we can. It is very, very rewarding knowing that the maximum number of new readers and longtime fans can enjoy these new adventures of the Girl of Steel!"

BATMAN BEGINS UPDATE

IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures on Tuesday announced that Batman Begins: The IMAX Experience is now IMAX's highest grossing digitally re-mastered 2D release, reaching the milestone in less than nine weeks.

With total grosses of $14.5 million on 72 worldwide IMAX screens, it eclipses the record set by The Matrix Reloaded: The IMAX Experience, which grossed just over $14 million in 22 weeks.

For the three day period from Friday, August 12 to Sunday, August 14 - its eighth weekend of release - Batman Begins: The IMAX Experience grossed an estimated $203,000 in 51 North American IMAX theatres, an increase of eight percent over the prior weekend. The film has now achieved a cumulative domestic per screen average of nearly $215,000 and continues to show staying power.

"The fact that Batman Begins set this box office record so quickly and continues to post great results underscores how perfectly suited the picture is for The IMAX Experience," said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler in a joint statement.

"This film's strong performance is a key reason why IMAX's grosses are up considerably this summer and we're delighted so many moviegoers are exploring the origins of the Batman legend in IMAX theatres. IMAX continues to further solidify its position as the place to see the biggest Hollywood event films in both our unparalleled 2D and IMAX 3D formats."

MARVEL'S 50TH MASTERWORKS VOLUME

Marvel Comics is celebrating its 50th volume of Marvel Masterworks with the Sept. 14 release of Marvel Masterworks: Captain Marvel Vol 1.

This anniversary edition recounts how Captain Marvel went from Kree Captain to Earth defender. It also collects his greatest battles against such foes as the Super-Skrull, Namor, Sentry #459 and Quasimodo the Living Computer.

The 240-page book collects Marvel Superheroes #12, 13 and Captain Marvel (Vol. 1) #1-9. It features the work of Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Gene Colan, Don Heck and Arnold Drake.

Here's how Marvel describes the story:

"For protecting the people of Earth, the Kree Captain Mar-vell is labeled a traitor to his people by the vicious Colonel Yon-Rogg. To blend in on his new adopted home Earth, Mar-vell assumes the human identity of Walter Lawson and chooses to defend his new home against all interplanetary threats.

"Mar-vell evens finds love on Earth as he becomes smitten with Carol Danvers, the woman who would later become Ms. Marvel, in her very first appearance."

"The Masterworks program started back in 1987. It got off to a great start then sort of disappeared after a few starts and stops. It is a great pleasure to know that in the last year wešve managed to restart the program and to start adding in other silver age titles beyond just the obvious," said David Gabriel, Marvel's director of sales. "2006 will be an exciting year as we continue to add Golden Age titles, Western, and Monster titles to the mix...as well as 12 more Silver Age editions."
