SECOND PRINTING FOR THE FRESHMEN

Freshmen, the riotous college-meets-superpowers series from Top Cow Productions and co-creators Seth Green and Hugh Sterbakov, is heading back to school. Freshmen #1 sold out less than one week after hitting stores, and Top Cow has responded to demand with Freshmen #1: Extra Credit. This second printing, due in stores in mid-September, will contain bonus material including character design sketches, a preview of upcoming covers, and more.

"Seth and I are thrilled that we're going back to print on Freshmen #1, because so many people have told us they weren't able to find it on the shelves," said co-creator and writer Sterbakov. "We'd like everyone to be able to read the story for a reasonable price. We're really enjoying the feedback on the first issue, and I can't wait to hear what everybody thinks about Freshmen #2, in stores August 31."

"It's refreshing to see fans and retailers alike respond so positively to this series," said Top Cow editor-in-chief Jim McLauchlin. "Freshmen combines the best elements of superheroes with a great dose of comedy. We're tickled that retailers have had such great faith in the title, and we're happy to make more available to fans who may have missed out the first time."

During the recent Comic-Con International in San Diego, Green, Sterbakov and artist Kirk held court at the Top Cow panel, discussing the characters in length during a slide show (click on thumbnails below for larger images).

Freshmen came about after Sterbakov and Green started bouncing ideas around while playing ping-pong. It was originally developed as a movie pitch, but them became a comic at Top Cow.

"Personally, I'm enjoying writing the comic more than I am writing a movie," Sterbakov said.

Although there's definite laughs in The Freshmen #1, the creators said there will be serious going, too.

"It's really a dramatic story and an adventure with a comedic element," Green said.

"It definitely gets more serious and much darker as it goes along," Sterbakov said.

Freshmen is planned as a six-issue mini-series and there will also be a Freshmen Yearbook.

"The six issues have a beginning, a middle and an end," McLauchlin said. "But it's open-ended enough where we can continue."

The six issues chronicle the first semester of college. Sterbakov said that the name of the book won't change if stories go beyond the first year. "I'm sticking by this book until it's cancelled and I will write every single issue," he said.

DARWYN COOKE EXCLUSIVE TO DC COMICS

Darwyn Cooke, the Eisner-Award winning writer/artist of DC: The New Frontier, has signed a two-year exclusive agreement with DC Comics.

Cooke is illustrating the upcoming Batman/The Spirit Special, written by Jeph Loeb, and is writing and illustrating DC's new monthly series The Spirit.

"DC is a natural fit for me," Cooke said. "They're the books I loved as a kid, and they're the company that has had a heck of a lot of faith in my work. When DC approached me about The Spirit, I realized what an enormous commitment it would be, and how much faith DC was placing in me. I consider The Spirit to be the challenge of my career, and I promise the readers I'll be giving it everything I've got. I wanted to go exclusive to show the degree to which I was commited to this project."

"Darwyn is incredibly versatile and talented, and we're very excited to have him working with us," said Dan DiDio, VP -- Executive Editor, DCU. "He's every bit as comfortable with small, personal stories like Catwoman or the sweeping grandeur of New Frontier. Having Darwyn on board is great not just for the DCU but for DC Comics as a whole."

NARWAIN PUBLISHING'S SLATE

Narwain Publishing has announced a slate of new comic book titles due to hit the U.S. market in November and December.

Here's a rundown:

* Jenna: Written by Philip Osbourne with art by Jim Fern, Joe Rubinstein and Takeshi Miyazawa. The book features an introduction by Iron Maiden front man Paul Dianno, and the second issue will ship with its own soundtrack CD showcasing 5 songs by Dianno.

"You're not going to read a comic for teenagers only, even though the art by Fern and Rubinsten is manga-like," Osbourne siad. "Jenna is a horror comic, and the topics it deals with are really tough. The story features some shojo manga-like characteristics... but they're not the only elements of it. Paul Dianno was interested in the Jenna project just because the series mingles different styles and genres. After all, the very soundtrack which was selected is a result of this double aspect... the record contains hard rock ballads and some real heavy metal.

* Touch: A three-issue series launching in December from writer Dario Maria Gulli and artist Wellington Dias. Touch tells of a televangelist who is half god and half thief. The book is wrapped in covers featuring art by David Mack.

* Wall after Wall: Also written by Gulli, with art by Alberto Ponticelli. Horror icon Tom Savini provides the introduction for the title, set for November.

* Narwain Preview: A 32-page book in November that features interviews, sketchbook art and new items about everything Narwain is going to publish. The book also contains the zero issue of The Great Seal, drawn by Peter Pachoumis, and a short story by Sergio Ibáñez ripped from the pages of Narwain's previously announced flagship title: Brian Yuzna's Horrorama.

* Free Fall: By writer Gianluca Piredda with art Eric J and Jimmy Palmiotti and a cover by Jay Anacleto. Free Fall showcases the Piredda's return to the thriller genre.

* Tales From a Lost Future: In the tradition of Horrorama, this title will launch as a 48-page anthology dedicated to the pure science fiction and featuring the work of Dunn, Amber Greenlee and Rob Worley.
