THE BATMAN UPDATE

"Night and the City," a new episode of The Batman animated series, will air on Kids' WB! on Saturday, Sept. 10.

Here's how the episode is described:

"Joker, Penguin and Riddle battle over control of the city, until finally deciding to settle their differences by giving all of Gotham to whoever is able to capture and discover the true identity of the Batman."

The episode is written by Steve Melching.

"It's been a thrill to write for the show," Melching told The Continuum. "I've been a Batman fan for over 30 years, since I was a wee lad. He's always been my favorite comic-book character, and I was disappointed that I never got a shot at BTAS. I guess I'm making up for lost time now..."

MARY JANE ONGOING SERIES

Marvel Comics on Thursday announced a new ongoing Mary Jane series, tentatively titled Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane.

The will follow the Sept. 21 release of Mary Jane: Vol. 2 Homecoming Digest, which collects the second mini-series by writer Sean McKeever and artists Takeshi Miyazawa.

"I'll tell ya, every time I sit down to write an MJ script it's a real delight, so for Marvel to commit to an ongoing series is just about the coolest thing," McKeever said. "So now I'm back, and I get to work with Takeshi and Christina (Strain) again! They are among the best in the comic book-making business, hands down, and I'm geeked as can be to be working with them on an ongoing.

"The folks at Marvel don't really have to publish comics about teenage drama, you know? They're doing pretty well for themselves with all the stuff that focuses on super heroics. So it means a lot to me that they're committed to Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane as an ongoing series, let alone putting it out there at all."

The series is set during Mary Jane Watson's high-school years.

"What you're gonna see in the first issue," McKeever said, "is the direction I'd always intended to take after the Homecoming storyline, but since it's a new chapter in MJ's so-called life it'll be easy to dive into."
