SMALLVILLE SEASON PREMIERE

The WB has released five images and a synopsis for "Arrival," the fifth-season premiere of Smallville scheduled to air on Thursday, Sept. 29 at 8 p.m.

Here's how the network describes the episode:

"Having been transported to the Fortress of Solitude, Clark (Tom Welling) is confronted by Jor-El, who tells him he cannot return to Smallville, instead he must stay and prepare to save the planet. Also, transported to the Fortress, Chloe (Allison Mack) is unable to handle the sub-zero temperature and collapses, begging Clark to use his powers to save her. Jor-El forbids him to leave, but finally acquiesces, telling Clark he must return before sunset or there will be dire consequences. Meanwhile, Lana (Kristin Kreuk) is horrified when she sees two Kryptonian aliens emerge from a spaceship discovered in the remnants of the meteor shower. The two aliens destroy what's left of the town searching for Kal-El."

Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer wrote the episode, which was directed by James Marshall.

DOCTOR STRANGE ANIMATED MOVIE

Doctor Strange will be the fourth title in the series of direct-to-DVD animated movies from Marvel Studios and Lions Gate.

Doctor Strange will follow two Ultimate Avengers movies and an Iron Man film in what is planned as a quarterly release schedule.

According to sources, it's likely that Greg Johnson, who wrote the first three movies, will be involved with the fourth.

Like Iron Man, Doctor Strange will be an origin movie.

Marvel Studios' Craig Kyle said that every movie will have its own look and feel.

"In your books, you follow creative teams, you follow artists, you follow writers," Kyle said. "When you watch the Ultimates, it will have one bone structure, one pallette, one look. Iron Man will have its own.

"That way when you grab one, it will be a fresh and new experience. If they do well, we will continue that look and that feel. It's like having its own universe each time."

UDON'S FALL PLANS

UDON Entertainment will be moving into self-publishing in October as a part of its Street Fighter Month.

The move to self-publish will be spearheaded by the re-launching of the popular CAPCOM Street Fighter series with Street Fighter II #0. The 32-page, full color introductory issue will alos include a free trading card from the upcoming Street Fighter Epic Battles Trading Card Game by Score Entertainment and Blockbuster, and it is still priced at the introductory offer of $1.99.

UDON's self-publishing will also include the reprinting of the sold-out, English-translated art book, Street Fighter: Eternal Challenge and the launch of UDON's first fantasy title, Exalted #1, a comic series based on the hit White Wolf RPG property.

"UDON has continued to grow over the years, and publishing our own books was something that became necessary and seemed inevitable," said UDON chief Erik Ko. "There are numerous exciting projects we're readying for the near future and they will all benefit greatly from gaining the flexibility and control that comes with being our own publisher."

UDON will continue to provide creative services to other companies this fall, including Marvel's re-launch of Sentinel series, DC/Wildstorm's Robotech and Dynamite Entertainment's Red Sonja.
