According to Variety, Sony Pictures is pushing back the release of the Ghost Rider movie from July 14 to Feb. 16, 2007.

Sony had seven films lined up for the summer.

"I think everybody is looking at their release schedule in 2006 and trying to avoid some of the traffic jams," Sony vice chairman Jeff Blade said. "Seven films for a summer is a lot."

This marks the second time the film has been moved, although this shift is more dramatic. The film was originally targeted for an August 2006 release.

The last Marvel film to open Presidents Day weekend was Daredevil, which set a box-office record the weekend in 2003.

Ghost Rider is directed by Mark Steven Johnson, who also directed Daredevil. The film stars Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Peter Fonda, Wes Bentley and Sam Elliott.

The film leaves Marvel with just X3 and possibly the Punisher sequel in its movie lineup for 2006.

2007 looks much stronger, with Ghost Rider, Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four 2 all having release dates scheduled.
