GWYNETH PALTROW IN IRON MAN MOVIE

Marvel Studios announced on Wednesday that it has signed on Academy Award winner Gwyneth Paltrow to join the cast of its Iron Man movie. Paltrow will take on the role of Virginia "Pepper" Potts, personal secretary and confidant to Tony Stark/Iron Man.

Paltrow joins a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Terrence Howard as Jim Rhodes. The film is being directed by Jon Favreau.

Here's how Marvel describes the character:

"Pepper is an invaluable resource to Stark Industries, and one of the few people in Tony's life who can go toe-to-toe with him, occasionally acting as his conscience and working to keep his priorities straight as he secretly defends the world as the armored hero known as Iron Man. Below the surface, Tony and Pepper share a deep attraction for one another although neither is willing to admit it."

"Gwyneth is the embodiment of a leading lady. She brings intelligence, poise and an incredible range of talent to this role," said Kevin Feige, president of production, Marvel Studios. "We could not be more excited about the great chemistry this illustrious cast will bring to Iron Man."

Paltrow made her film debut in 1991 with Shout, and delivered a breakout performance as Jane Austen's heroine in Emma (1996). Her role in 1998's Shakespeare in Love earned her a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild award and Oscar for Best Actress.

More recently, she starred in the film adaptation of of the stage play Proof (2005), which reunited her with Shakespeare in Love director John Madden and earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. Other film credits include Se7en (1995), Sliding Doors (1998), A Perfect Murder (1998), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Sylvia (2003) and Running with Scissors (2006). She will next be seen in The Good Night with Penélope Cruz, which was directed by her brother, Jake Paltrow.

Filming on Iron Man is scheduled to begin in Los Angeles in March for a May 2, 2008 release.

NBC RENEWS HEROES

NBC has ordered an early full-season pick-up for the 2007-08 season for Heroes, it was announced on Wednesday by Kevin Reilly, president, NBC Entertainment.

Also picked up were The Office, My Name is Earl and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

"These four series represent some of the best of what we consider to be the NBC brand of quality shows," Reilly said. "It is a pleasure to give them an early renewal to develop more stories for next year since we know they will remain both critical and commercial successes for a long time to come."

Heroes is the No. 1 new series of the season in adults 18-49, total viewers and other key categories and, through 16 weeks of the season, is tied for the No. 3 ranking among all shows in 18-49. Heroes is NBC's highest-rated first-year drama in 18-49 in 12 years, since ER debuted in 1994.

In other Heroes news, NBC has released the following description of "Godsend," next Monday's new episode:

"Picking up two weeks after recent events, Nathan¹s (Adrian Pasdar) determination to save a comatose Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) forces him to turn to Simone (Tawny Cypress) for help. Isaac¹s (Santiago Cabrera) puzzling "Hiro vs. T-Rex" painting inspires Hiro (Masi Oka) and Ando (guest star James Kyson Lee) to search for the pictured samurai sword. Jessica (Ali Larter) struggles against Niki¹s decision to turn herself into police. With his associate Eden dead and Matt (Greg Grunberg) on his heels, H.R.G. (Jack Coleman) tries to focus on his orders regarding Sylar (guest star Zachary Quinto). After being offered a choice by the Haitian (guest star Jimmy Jean-Louis), Claire (Hayden Panettiere) struggles with changes her decision has wrought. Taking up his father¹s quest, Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy) attempts to share information about who is 'on the list' of people with special abilities and the threats to their lives. Meanwhile, a new hero (guest star Christopher Eccleston) makes a shocking debut."
