MEGACON: DC COMICS PANEL

ORLANDO -- DC Comics and Marvel Comics usually compete on Wednesdays with their new comic books.

For about 10 minutes on Saturday, they competed for convention-goers.

An overlap of scheduling resulted in both the end of the Marvel panel and the beginning of the DC panel happening at the same time.

Representing DC were editor Mike Marts, writer/inker Jimmy Palmiotti and artists Ethan VanSciver and J.G. Jones.

For the record, the attendance at both panels was approximately the same.

Following are highlights from the DC panel:

* Palmiotti said that Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters might continue after its eight-issue run, possible as another mini-series. He said the characters would be seen again.

* Jones said that the All Star Batgirl series he's working on with Geoff Johns will feature a Barbara Gordon just out of high school.

* Marts said that, despite a fan-provoked reprieve, sales caused the cancellation of Manhunter.

* Marts said the recently released image from DC has "many, many clues" in it.

"I wish I could say more about it, but I just can't," he said. "There are lots of Easter eggs."

* Marts said the World War III specials written by Keith Champagne and John Ostrander came out of so much material generated by 52 that couldn't fit into the weekly series.

"I'm amazed at what those guys working on those books have been able to do in a short amount of time," he said of the World War III creators.

* "It's a blast so far," Van Sciver said of June's Sinestro Corps special, which, at 54 pages, is the longest single issue of his career.

"They're all over the universe and their only distinguishing features to the abilitly to instill fear," Van Sciver said. "I think it's going to be a lot weirder than I think people are expecting when they see the whole team.

"This is the start of something much, much bigger. Don't be surprised if you some DCU members getting offered their yellow ring."

* How soon will readers see characters from 52 in DCU books? "That depends on who survives," Marts said.

* What's up with The Monitors? "The Monitors and their story will become very important in the DCU," Marts said.

* Marts said there might be some fifth-week events in DC's future.

* Palmiotti on Jonah Hex: "There's a lot more coming up with Hex that nobody's going to see coming."

* Marts on 52: "It succeeded, and a lot of people didn't think it would succeed. A lot of people were like, 'When will the first issue miss?' But we've got 41 issues down and only 11 to go."

* Marts said that the World War III event taks place "over a short amount of time." Asked about the JSA's involvement, VanSciver said his cover for the fourth issue features the group.

* Marts said readers will see more of The Bleed in the DCU.

* The future of Ray Palmer? "Next question," Marts replied.

* Marts said that the integration of Supergirl has helped sales of the Legion of Super-Heroes book.

* Asked if DC is listening to readers' reaction to The Flash, VanSciver said, "A big yes."
