300 SETS BOX-OFFICE RECORD

300, the Warner Bros. film based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, set an opening weekend record for March, pulling in an estimated $70.0 million its first three days.

Launching in 3,103 theaters, 300 beat the previous March opening record of $68.0 million set by Ice Age 2: The Meltdown in 2006 and had the third-largest opening for an R-rated film, trailing only The Matrix Reloaded ($91.8 million) and The Passion of The Christ ($83.7 million).

300 nearly tripled its closest competition, Wild Hogs, which brought in $28.0 million.

It also bettered Ghost Rider's $45.4 million for the top opening of 2007.

Sony's Ghost Rider placed fourth over the weekend with $6.8 million, pushing its total to $104.1 million.
