TOP COW'S FIRST BORN

Ron Marz, writer of Top Cow's upcoming First Born crossover, said the purprose behind the event was to tell "a story that matters."

"Yes, it's a crossover in that it involves the central characters and themes of the Top Cow Universe, but we're concentrating on telling a tight story, rather than some sprawling thing with a dozen tie-in chapters," Marz said.

Spinning out of current events in the ongoing Witchblade series, First Born will reveal the truth behind Sara Pezzini's mysterious pregnancy and culminate with the birth of her first child. This birth will have lasting effects in Witchblade, The Darkness ongoing series launching in the fall and other Top Cow Universe titles for the coming year.

The three-issue First born mini-series, featuring painted art by Stjepan Sejic, launches in July.

Top Cow will preview the crossover with a 99-cent First Born First Look issue in June as well as a lead-in in Image Comics' offering for Free Comic Book Day.

"I'm really pleased with the way it's turning out, especially Stjepan's amazing artwork," Marz said. "With the Free Comic Book Day story, and the 99-cent issue, we've done a couple of appetizers that I think will make people want to come back for the main course."

FANTASTIC FOUR ANIMATED UPDATE

Taffy Entertainment on Wednesday announced it has signed a UK deal for the Fantastic Four animated series. GMTV has acquired the series for its weekend childrenšs strand, Toonattik, which airs on ITV1 and CITV.

In separate deals, the series has also been acquired by TV Globo in Brazil, MRTL in Hungary and Fox Video for Europe and Latin America.

"Fantastic Four is one of the hottest super-hero franchises in the global marketplace, so it's appropriate that it should find a home on these prominent channels," said Lionel Marty, President, Worldwide Sales at Taffy Entertainment. "We're confident that the strong series debut on France's M6 will be mirrored on these further broadcast platforms."

The show recently launched on France's M6, where it has consistently rated high on the channel's children's programming slots. Recent sales for the show have been secured by Taffy Entertainment with YTV and Vrak TV in Canada, Cartoon Network Germany, TV Catalunya and ETB in Spain, TVN Chile, Club RTL in Belgium, MBC in the Middle East, TV12 in Singapore, NTV 7 in Malaysia and Alter Channel in Greece. The series will also be seen on Cartoon Network in Europe, Latin America and Asia in 2007.

In the United States, the series debuted last fall on Cartoon Network and is expected to return this spring in conjunction with Fatnastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

ERIC JOHNSON TO PLAY FLASH GORDON

Eric Johnson, who played Whitney Fordman on Smallville, has been cast in the title role of Sci Fi Channel's new Flash Gordon series.

Produced by Reunion Pictures, this modern day retelling of the classic comic strip franchise will begin production in May with an eye toward an August premiere.

Here's how the network describes the show:

"Placing a 21st century spin on a science-fiction classic, Sci Fi's contemporized version of Flash Gordon follows the all-new adventures of Flash and his companions, Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov. Ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances, they find themselves as Earth's last line of defense against the forces of the merciless dictator Ming."

The first two episodes of Flash Gordon are being written by Peter Hume and directed by Rick Rosenthal. Additional casting is currently underway.

After his Smallville stint, Johnson has made guest starring appearances in several television series, including Criminal Minds, The Dead Zone, Ghost Whisperer and The Unit.
