SPIDER-MAN 3 SETS OPENING-DAY RECORD

Spider-Man has regained his box-office throne.

Spider-Man 3 took in a record $59 million domestically on its opening day Friday, breaking the previous high of $55.8 million for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest in its first day last summer.

According to Sony, Spider-Man 3 also took in $45 million overseas on Friday for a worldwide total for the day of $104 million, another record.

Spider-Man 3 is on track to regain the record for the franchise for the best three-day opening. In 2002, Spider-Man brought in $114.8 million, a record that stood under Pirates of the Caribbean made $135.6 last year.

Estimates have Spider-Man 3 making as much as $145 million in its opening weekend.

The film opened in 4,252 theaters on Friday.

A Sony representative told The Continuum the studio currently does not have any comments on the box office.
