HELLBOY 2 STARTS PRODUCTION

Universal Pictures announced on Thursday that principal photography has begun on Hellboy 2: The Golden Army from writer/director Guillermo del Toro and producers Lawrence Gordon, Lloyd Levin and Mike Richardson. The film will be released on August 1, 2008.

Also back for the sequel are actors Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Selma Blair (Liz Sherman) and Doug Jones (Abe Sapien).

Here's how the studio describes the film:

"After an ancient truce existing between humankind and the invisible realm of the fantastic is broken, hell on Earth is ready to erupt. A ruthless leader who treads the world above and the one below defies his bloodline and awakens an unstoppable army of creatures. Now, it's up to the planet's toughest, roughest superhero to battle the merciless dictator and his marauders. He may be red. He may be horned. He may be misunderstood. But when you need the job done right, it's time to call in Hellboy.

"Along with his expanding team in the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development -- pyrokinetic girlfriend Liz, aquatic empath Abe and protoplasmic mystic Johann -- the BPRD will travel between the surface strata and the unseen magical one, where creatures of fantasy become corporeal. And Hellboy, a creature of two worlds who's accepted by neither, must choose between the life he knows and an unknown destiny that beckons him."

The screenplay for Hellboy 2 is written by Guillermo del Toro, from a screen story by del Toro and Mike Mignola, based upon the Dark Horse comic created by Mignola and the 2004 motion picture Hellboy.

The film also features Luke Goss as the ruthless leader of the underworld, Prince Nuada, and Anna Walton as his compassionate sister, Princess Nuala.

Hellboy 2's behind-the-scenes team includes Oscar-winning director of photography Guillermo Navarro, production designer Steven Scott, costume designer Sammy Sheldon and editor Bernat Vilaplana. Chris Symes is the executive producer of the film, with Mike Mignola serving as co-producer.

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army will film in both Budapest and the United Kingdom, with post-production based in London.

TOP COW'S PILOT SEASON

Top Cow Productions on Friday revealed details today for its fall fan-interactive promotion, Pilot Season 2007.

The event will consist of six self-contained one-shot specials featuring established Top Cow characters that are currently without regular series. After all six issues have been released, fans will have an opportunity to vote online for their favorite and the two winning characters will receive their own series in 2008.

As with a TV pilot, each of the six issues will serve as a sample of what a full length series might be like. The six issues will be released in August through November with one issue in August, two each in September and October, and the final issue releasing in November. The six characters starring are -- in order -- Ripclaw, Velocity, Cyblade, The Angelus, The Necromancer and Aphrodite IX.

August's Ripclaw Pilot Season #1 will be written by Jason Aaron with art by Jorge Lucas and a cover by Tony Moore.

"This is much more than a simple gimmick," said Top Cow's vice president of editorial, Rob Levin. ³We've put together teams to tell stories that flat out do not suck. Fans don't often get a say in terms of editorial direction in comics. Rather than stacking the deck and putting out two really good books and four okay ones, we've got six killer titles across the board. Any one of these books could support its own series."
