COMING MONDAY

January soliciations, TV news, Marvel news -- and much more!!!

THE SUPER POWERS TEAM: GALACTIC GUARDIANS

Warner Home Video is releasing The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians, which collects the final season in Hanna-Barbera's 12-year run of the Super Friends franchise, on Tuesday.

Warner Home Video is also releasing The Adventures of Aquaman on Tuesday.

The two-disc Galactic Guardians set includes eight 22-minute episodes. The special feature is a mini-documentary called "Super Friends Redux: Galactic Guardians."

Writers Rich Fogel and Alan Burnett and storyboard artist Michael Swanigan are interviewed, as are DC Comics representatives Mark Waid, Dan DiDio and Paul Levitz.

Topics on the documentary include how the show began to mirror the DC Comics titles of the day, with new designs by premier DC artist Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez; the inclusion of Cyborg on the team; and the outer-space aspects of the season.

Two episodes are spotlighted, including "The Fear," which, for the first time, dealt with the deaths of Bruce Wayne's parents. Burnett noted the story was originally developed as a pilot for a Batman series.

The other episode discussed is "The Death of Superman," in which Superman apparently dies from Kryptonite poisoning, turning a dark shade of green.

AVATAR PRESS' GRAVEL

Avatar Press is launching Gravel, its newest Warren Ellis-written series, in January with a #0 issue that will cost $1.99.

Like the launch of Ellis' Black Summer, Gravel #0 is not a preview, but is actually the opening part of the story.

Mike Wolfer will co-write the title with Ellis, and the full-color first issue and regular series will feature interiors from the artist of Ellis' graphic novel Crecy and Doktor Sleepless wraparound covers, Raulo Caceres.

Sgt. Major Gravel first appeared in Ellis' mini-series Strange Kiss in late 1999, and the combat magician working deniable-op's would later be the focus of six collected editions. Gravel's missions, and the occasional cash-in-hand work, bring him to toe-to-toe with the most profane and brutal depths of the criminal world.

"Every time the weird bastard steps into the daylight, people come out to see what he's up to for some reason," Ellis siad. "It's funny how a character created for a single story, Strange Kiss, has hung around. I'm creating a whole new mythology and Occult Cosmology for Gravel, the series. And also having some fun with The Sigsand Manuscript, the preferred Ancient Occult Text of Thomas Carnacki, the supernatural detective created by William Hope Hodgson, who was a great influence on Lovecraft."

"William Gravel has generated quite a following of die-hard fans, who have eagerly awaited the next disturbing chapter in the Strange Kiss/Kisses/Killings series," Wolfer said. "They have been loyal and quite vocal, and at last Warren Ellis, Raulo Caceres and I are able to deliver what the fans have asked for, for the first time in full color and with no punches pulled."

The monthly Gravel series is scheduled to begin in March.

HEROES' KRISTEN BELL

Kristen Bell, formerly of Veronica Mars, makes her debut as Elle on NBC's Heroes on Monday with the "Fight or Flight episode."

During a press conference last week, Bell said she couldn't reveal Elle's power, other than to say it's "very cool."

"She has ties to HRG and to Claire," Bell said. "And there's going to be a very interesting dynamic, I think, between her and Claire as far as what is and what is not."

Bell said Elle doesn't have many boundaries concerning her powers. think, between her and Claire as far as what is and what is not.

"Which I think is the really interesting part of playing this character on this particular show because the whole first season has been about these fairly good-natured people in trying to embrace these confusing abilities and being very conflicted as to how they should be using them," she said. think, between her and Claire as far as what is and what is not.

"And Elle is not that way at all. She very much enjoys her power and enjoys the emotional power it gives her over other people."

Bell noted that Elle also has ties to Suresh and information about Peter's past.
