MEET THE SPARTANS

Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, writer-directors of Meet the Spartans, said that 300 was easy to parody in the 20th Century Fox film, which opens on Friday.

"The characters are overly macho -- and the film is rife with homoerotic undertones," Friedberg said. "We picked up on all those themes, which seemed like they'd be a lot of fun to explore in a parody."

"The characters in 300 take themselves very seriously," Seltzer said. "Their humorless natures gave us a lot to explore. In Meet the Spartan the characters still treat themselves and their situations seriously, but we juxtapose the dialogue and actions in ways that parody the original film."

Sean Maguire plays the role of Leonidas, made famous by Gerard Butler in 300.

"To make this kind of comedy work," Friedberg said, "it's important for the lead actors to play their roles grounded in reality. During his audition and even while filming, Sean often seemed oblivious that he was even acting in a comedy."

"We made Meet the Spartans with love and admiration toward 300," Maguire said. "Although it may look like we were just being silly with it, we really do appreciate that film. And I tried in almost every scene to sort of pay homage to Gerry Butler and the incredible job he did in the role of Leonidas."

The cast also includes Carmen Electra as Queen Margo, Kevin Sorbo as the Captain, Ken Davitian as Xerxes, Diedrich Bader as Traitoro and Jareb Dauplaise as Dilio.
