WIZARD WORLD LOS ANGELES: DC NATION PANEL

LOS ANGELES -- DC Comics kicked off its programming at Wizard World Los Angeles on Friday with its staple: the DC Nation panel.

Following are highlights:

* Panelists included Dan DiDio, Bob Wayne, Adam Beechen and a late-arriving Ethan Van Sciver. DiDio said the originally scheduled Geoff Johns could not attend due to "personal business."

* DiDio was asked about Jack Kirby's Fourth World, noting that Kirby was signed to write and draw four books a month and some of the subequent creators might have gone astray from Kirby's original plans.

DiDio said DC is now trying to better integrate those concepts into the DC Universe.

* What about Fifth World? "They get better," DiDio said.

* Asked about the Batman/Fourth World rumors, DiDio related a story about how a fan, "Frank from Boston," who got through to his phone one night at the DC offices. "Dude, you can't respond to rumors," DiDio said he told the fan. He said that Batman becoming involved with the New Gods would be a "silly idea."

* DiDio said he isn't a big fan of "what if" stories that spin out of big events. He noted that current events of Booster Gold have that kind of feel.

* DiDio said that Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters will be see in Final Crisis.

* DiDio said a "cult fave" will return in the Reign of Hell mini-series.

* Beechen said he has seen the layouts to the final issue of Countdown to Final Crisis and they are "nuts."

* DiDio said Final Crisis will be "manageable," along with other big events for Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.

* Is Geoff Johns writing a Legion mini-series? DiDio called it a rumor. "I don't respond to that," he said.

DiDio then said there will be an answer to that at the end of the month.

* DiDio said the return of Manhunter in June will have a grittier feel. "It's going to be the Law & Order of DC Comics," DiDio said.

* DiDio said Sinestro Corps War would be his choice for the next comics story to be adapted to an animated movie.

* Van Sciver said there are "lots of plans" for Black Adam. DiDio said Mary Marvel will flow from Countdown into Final Crisis and Black Adam will appear in the book readers would expect.

* DiDio said everybody loses in the middle of Final Crisis.

* DiDio said that with the DCU generally, if a comic doesn't sell well as a monthly, the trades won't sell either. An exception is Jonah Hex.

* DiDio said that Johns will have the JSA roster at about two dozen, but each one will get a moment to shine. He said JSA is a great place to showcase new characters.

* DiDio and Van Sciver both said that "Blackest Night" will be universal in scope.

* DiDio said The Question will be featured in the first and last issues of Final Crisis and will tie to Kirby. There are no other plans for the character.

* Wayne said Frank Miller's Ronin will get an Absolute edition.

* DiDio said there will be as espionage story that involves Bronze Tiger.

* DiDio confirmed that JSA Classified will be cancelled.

* DiDio said there are no plans for a JLA crossover with the Titans teams. There will be a big Titans event toward the end of the year. "There are a lot of original characters in Teen Titans right now and I want to give them a chance to shine," said DiDio, who edits the book.

* DiDio likened the new Titans book to the TV show Friends. "They can count on each other and enjoy each others' company," he said, noting the book will focus on relationships.

* Wayne said Tiny Titans #1 will be available through Free Comic Book Day.

* DiDio said Jim Shooter's Legion started strongly, although reaction has calmed down of late. DiDio said Shooter will be on the book for the forseeable future, with plans extending beyond the year.

* DiDio said the Action Comics Annual "is done and on its way."

* DiDio said "there's more story there" with the Secret Six.

* Beechen said the new Batgirl series will launch in July. "It's going to answer all your questions about why Batgirl has been acting so strange the past couple of years," Beechen said. The artist remains unannounced.
