Smallville news -- and much more!

BIRDS OF PREY: THE COMPLETE SERIES

Warner Home Video followed its announcement of a Witchblade DVD set on Wednesday with another comics-inspired collection, Birds of Prey.

WHV will release Birds of Prey: The Complete Series on July 29. The four-disc set will include all 13 episodes from the 2002 series as well as new bonus features.

The series -- featuring Ashley Scott as Huntress, Dina Meyer as Oracle and Rachel Skarsten as Dinah-- averaged 7.6 million viewers per week and was the largest audience in the 18-34 demographic for The WB at that time.

Here's how the show is described:

"While the world was sleeping at night, the Birds of Prey flock together to fight crime on the streets of New Gotham City. Several years after the city was abandoned by Batman, the awesome threesome of Huntress, Oracle (and Dinah was formed. Huntress is the daughter of Batman and Catwoman and can smell danger from miles away. Dinah has the gift of clairvoyance and Oracle leads the team through her cyber experience, despite being wheelchair bound by the Joker. During the course of the show, the girls are often confronted with schemes masterminded by Dr. Quinzel, but always prevail and beat him at his own game."

"The Birds of Prey continues the legacy of Batman in an action-packed show with a trio of female heroines that are adored by fans," said Rosemary Markson, WHV Vice President, TV Marketing, "We are delighted to finally release Birds of Prey: The Complete Series for the very loyal fan base and a new generation of comics lovers."

Bonus features will include the Gotham Girls animated shorts.

KNIGHT RIDER, XIII ON NBC

NBC on Wednesday announced that Knight Rider will become a weekly series beginning next season.

As part of its plans for the next year, NBC also announced the mini-series XIII, based on the European graphic novel series recently translated into English by Dabel Brothers/Marvel Comics.

The Knight Rider series, spinning out of the Feb. 17 movie starring Justin Bruening, will air on Wednesdays at 8 p.m., with encores airing on Saturdays at 9 p.m. through the fall.

The Knight Rider movie in February scored the highest 18-49 rating for any movie on any network in nearly three years.

The series continues the 1980s franchise that starred David Hasselhoff.

Here's how NBC describes Knight Rider:

"As the sequel resumes, KITT is absolutely the coolest car ever created: its supercomputer capable of hacking almost any system; its weapons systems efficient; and its body -- thanks to its creator's work and nanotechnology -- is capable of actually shifting shape and color. It is the ultimate car -- and someone will be willing to do anything to obtain it."

The series will also star Deanna Russo, Sydney Tamiia Poitier and Bruce Davison. David Bartis, Doug Liman and Gary Scott Thompson are executive producers, with David Andron as supervising producer and writer.

XIII will star Val Kilmer, who played Batman in Batman Forever and was the voice of KITT in the Knight Rider movie, and Stephen Dorff, who played Deacon Frost in Blade.

Here's how NBC describes the project:

"This adrenaline-charged mini-series begins dramatically as the first female U.S. President is shot dead by a sniper during her Veteran's Day speech. Three months later, a wounded man is found tattered in a forest with no memory of his identity. The only clue is a tattoo on his neck, 'XIII.' Could his lightning-fast reflexes and killer instincts betray him as the presidential assassin that the U.S. is desperately searching for? Submerged in a far-reaching conspiracy, which threatens to overthrow the entire government, XIII's identity becomes the key to unraveling a complex and dangerous secret that will shock and excite."

XIII is produced by Prodigy Pictures and Cipango.

As part of its plans for the next year, NBC also announced Heroes will return to its Monday 9 p.m. time period for its third season.

AMERICAN FLAGG! HARDCOVER

Image Comics has announced a July release for Howard Chaykin's America Flagg! hardcover, commemorating the series' 25th anniversary.

"This hardcover goes well beyond my wildest initial expectations," Chaykin said. "The past few years consisted of remastering and restoring every line of every panel on every page to ensure this is the best edition possible. I have been extremely fortunate to have both Image Comics and Dynamite Entertainment working hard on this hardcover, and they have made me, as a creator of one of my most personal works, as happy as possible."

Here's how Image describes the book:

"In American Flagg!'s dystopian future, America and its corporations have fled the Earth for the relative safety of Mars. Their abandoned planet has been ravaged by war and a recently fired television star, Reuben Flagg, becomes its reluctant champion."

The series' first 14 issues will be collected in the hardcover, designed by Chip Kidd. It will feature contain Chaykin's never-before-seen sketchbook, a new, 12-page story written and illustrated by Chaykin, an introduction by Michael Chabon and afterword by Jim Lee.

The first softcover volume of American Flagg! (collecting issues #1-6 and the new story) will arrive in September, with the second volume (#7-14) arriving in winter.
