SPEED RACER PREVIEW

Warner Bros. on Tuesday released 34 images from Speed Racer, which arrives in theaters and IMAX on Friday, May 9.

Here's how Warner Bros. describes the film:

"Hurtling down the track, careening around, over and through the competition, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is a natural behind the wheel. Born to race cars, Speed is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless. His only real competition is the memory of the brother he idolized--the legendary Rex Racer, whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven to fulfill.

"Speed is loyal to the family racing business, led by his father, Pops Racer (John Goodman), the designer of Speed's thundering Mach 5. When Speed turns down a lucrative and tempting offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company's maniacal owner (Roger Allam) but uncovers a terrible secret--some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless tycoons who manipulate the top drivers to boost profits. If Speed won't drive for Royalton, Royalton will see to it that Speed never crosses another finish line.

"The only way for Speed to save his family's business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game. With the support of his family and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), Speed teams with his one-time rival--the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox)--to win the race that had taken his brother's life: the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible.

"Yet, the ultimate test of Speed Racer's true racing grit will be at the pinnacle event of the World Racing League: the Grand Prix. But standing between Speed and the checkered flag are the world's best--and most cutthroat--competitors, fueled by a million-dollar bounty from Royalton to the driver who takes Speed out once and for all."

SMALLVILLE: "APOCALYPSE"

The CW has released four images from "Apocalypse," the Thursday, May 1 episode of Smallville.

Here's how the network describes the episode:

"Clark (Tom Welling) discovers that Kara (Laura Vandervoort) sent messages from Krypton in the past that indicate that Brainiac (guest star James Marsters) wants to kill Baby Kal-El so Clark will not exist in the future. Clark is torn because he thinks the world would be better off if he had never arrived in Smallville. Jor-El arranges for him to see what life would have been like if Clark hadn't existed -- Lex (Michael Rosenabum) is President of the United States, Kara is raised by the Luthors, Jonathan (John Schneider) is alive, Lana (Kristin Kreuk) is happily married and Chloe (Allison Mack) and Lois (Erica Durance) are ace reporters."

The episode was directed by Welling and written by Turi Meyer and Al Septien.

MARVEL COMICS ROUNDUP

Following an announcement last weekend at New York Comic Con, Marvel Comics has released details for its adapations of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game.

Marvel will concurrently publish Ender's Game and the companion series Ender's Shadow beginning this fall.

Here's how Marvel describes the project:

"The comic series will mark the first visualization of the best-selling sci-fi epic in which the world's most gifted children are taken to Battle School to prepare them for the fight of their lives -- and to save humanity from its greatest threat! It is the tale of an unassuming young boy named Ender Wiggin, who will rise up to be the greatest warrior and leader that the human race has ever known. This saga follows Ender and his friends as they grow to become the last hope and line of defense for all of mankind."

The first Ender's Game mini-series will be written by Christopher Yost, with art by Pasqual Ferry.

"Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow are my most popular novels, and for many years I've withheld them from adaptation until the conditions were exactly right," Card said. "I've worked with Marvel for several years now, beginning with the Ultimate Iron Man series, and I trust them to do superb work. They understand the stories; they know how to translate them into graphic-novel form; and nobody has higher standards of professionalism. In short, now is the time, and Marvel is the publisher to bring Ender and Bean to life in the visual media."

In other Marvel news:

* Marvel has released Brandon Peterson's variant cover to Captain Britain & The MI-13 #1, due in stores on May 14

STAN LEE, VIRGIN COMICS TEAM

Virgin Comics and Stan Lee's POW! Entertainment have announced that they have formed a new partnership.

In his deal with Virgin, Stan Lee will return to comic books as both a writer and editor, to oversee the creation of an entirely new universe of superhero characters.

"I can't wait to start pitting my newest, most exciting superheroes against comicdom's most powerful, diabolical super villains and then have the fun of tossing them into far-out, thrill-a-minute adventures to challenge the readers' imagination!" Lee said. "And who better to share in the fun, creating wondrous new worlds without limit, than the incredibly talented and dedicated guys at Virgin Comics?"

"Stan Lee is a cultural icon and we welcome him to his new home, Virgin Comics, for this bold new chapter in his great legacy," said Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Group president and founder.

The new universe will initially be anchored around the exploits of a team of 10 superheroes of various backgrounds and origins. As this team evolves, readers will learn that not all of these heroes are what they seem, as infighting, abuses of power and internal struggles will slowly challenge these heroes as they learn the real villains might lurk within themselves.

The new universe will be unveiled in early 2009 and will initially be launched as a series of 10 graphic novels linked into a series of online animated shorts. The story is intended to provide a seamless online and offline experience allowing audiences numerous entry points and engagement synergies as they immerse themselves into this universe of heroes.
