HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY -- $35.8 MILLION

Hellboy II: The Golden Army topped the box office in its opening weekend of release, pulling in an estimated $35.8 million.

The film, which opened in 3,204 theaters, matched its pre-release projections for the weekend.

The first Hellboy, which opened on April 2, 2004, took $23.1 million in its first weekend. Its domestic total was $59.6 million, which should easily be surpassed by the sequel.

Hellboy II edged Hancock, which brought in $33.0 million in its second weekend.

Wanted placed fifth with $11.5 million, pushing its total to $112.0 million.

FEAR ITSELF: "NEW YEAR'S DAY"

NBC has released a description and eight images from "New Year's Day," the Thursday, July 17 episode of Fear Itself.

The episode was written by 30 Days of Night's Steve Niles from a story by Paul Kane and was directed by Darren Borsman from the Saw movies.

Here's how NBC describes the episode:

"A young woman (Briana Evigan) wakes up in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by horrifying zombies and struggles to survive the day."

Niall Matter and Zulay Henao also star.
