THE DARK KNIGHT SETS RECORDS

The Dark Knight is off to a soaring start at the box office, setting records in its first day of release.

The film took in an estimated $66.4 million in its first day, setting the single-day record.

The Dark Knight now looks like it will break Spider-Man 3's opening weekend record of $151.1 million. Spider-Man 3 opened with $59.8 million.

The first day take for Dark Knight included an estimated $18.5 million for midnight shows, which broke the record of $16.9 by Star Wars: Episode 3 -- The Revenge of the Sith.

The Dark Knight made far more in its first day than Batman Begins did in its first weekend. Batman Begins had openings of $15 million for the first day and $48.7 million for the first weekend.

Last weekend's box-office champion, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, fell to fifth place on Friday with $3.1 million, pushing its total to $49.5 million.

Wanted placed eighth with $1.6 million, pushing its total to $119.8 million. The Incredible Hulk was 15th with $0.1 million, pushing its total to $131.3 millon, and Iron Man was 16th with $0.1 million, pushing its total to $314.0 million.

JOHN WOO TO DIRECT CALIBER

Radical Publishing has announced that director John Woo has signed on to direct the film adaptation of Caliber, based on Radical Publishing's Caliber: First Canon of Justice written and created by Sam Sarkar.

Caliber will be produced by Woo's Lion Rock Productions, Johnny Depp's Infinitum Nihil and Radical Pictures, the motion picture production company of Radical Publishing. Sarkar will be the screenwriter.

"Having John Woo on board for this film and Johnny Depp's company producing is a dream come true," said Radical Publishing President Barry Levine. "I got to fly to China and see John Woo during the production of Red Cliff. During that time, Sam and I got to hear John's vision and thoughts on Caliber and we both agreed that he is the right kind of artist we needed to bring Sam's work to life. John Woo is a top-tier director and we are all proud and excited to have him on board."

"For me as a writer, the dream of telling this story and opening up the world of Caliber goes back more than 12 years, but I've been a fan of John Woo's for even longer than that," Sarkar said. "It is such a great honor for Barry and I to work with John and Terence on the realization of Caliber.

"I think it is a chance to create something that will really entertain and resonate with people all over the world."
