COMIC-CON: FARSCAPE![]() ![]() Boom! Studios and The Jim Henson Company revealed that Rockne S. O'Bannon, creator of Farscape, will be writing Boom!'s Farscape comic-book series.
"This is a dream opportunity for me -- to get to continue the Farscape saga," O'Bannon said. "The comic-book series starts off directly where the Peacekeeper Wars mini-series left us. It's like we're finally getting to experience Season Five of Farscape. Not only that, but the stories in the ongoing comic series will completely tie into the upcoming Farscape webisodes. Farscape lives!"
"I can't tell you how incredibly excited I am that Rockne will be part of the comic-book team. I'm a fan, and he's one of the best writers around," said Boom! Studios editor-in-chief Mark Waid. "I'm doubly pleased that both Rockne and The Jim Henson Company folks have responded to the idea of making this series a direct continuation of the Farscape TV series rather than an out-of-continuity tie-in. For fans of Farscape, and with the show's creator involved, the comic series will fill that outer-space-sized void the show once occupied."
"Farscape the television series was a huge production, but we still had to tailor our storytelling to conform to the inevitable television limitations of story length and logistics and budget," O'Bannon said. "The great thing about the comic book medium is that the scope and scale of the Farscape world is no longer restricted. In terms of where we can go, what we can show -- these new stories will be Farscape Unrestrained."
Not wanting to give away too much of what's in store in the new comic series, O'Bannon did reveal, "One of the places that we always wanted to explore in the television series was Rygel's home world of Hyneria. No matter how passionate we were about telling that story, we simply couldn't do it. But now one of the massive-scale arcs in our first four-issue comic series has us off to Hyneria!"
COMIC-CON: BRYAN SINGER TO PRODUCE FREEDOM FORMULA![]() Radical Publishing has announced that Bryan Singer, director of X-Men, X2, and Superman Returns, has signed on to produce Freedom Formula: Ghost of the Wasteland, based on Radical Publishing's comic-book written by Edmund Shern.
This is the third film deal by Radical Publishing, following the announcements of John Woo being attached to direct Caliber and Peter Berg producing and developing to direct Hercules.
The first issue of the five-issue Freedom Formula: Ghost of the Wasteland #1 debuted at Comic-Con International and will be in stores on August 6.
Singer's Bad Hat Harry Productions and Radical Pictures will produce Freedom Formula, with Singer and Radical Publishing's President and Publisher Barry Levine as producers.
"Creator Edmund Shern and I spoke about finding a property that originated in the Asian market, but was easily adaptable as a North American property," Levine said. "All he did was show me one image of the mecha, one paragraph of its characters and the world, and I green-lit it immediately."
Here's how Radical describes the property:
"Set in the future, Freedom Formula is a modern day Top Gun, where racing exosuits replace the classic, high flying fighter jets, establishing a dangerous new breed of illegal racing. The story follows a genetically engineered racer who discovers that his bloodline possesses the power to change society. Through a series of cataclysmic events, our protagonist comes face to face with his destiny and a means for revolution."
"Freedom Formula is a story that explores the misnomer of absolute freedom and realizing what's important is not the choices we can make, but the choices we do make," Shern said.
