Top Cow news -- and much more!

PARAMOUNT TO DISTRIBUTE MARVEL FILMS; KENNETH BRANAGH TO DIRECT THOR?

Marvel Studios has a distribution deal for its upcoming Avengers-based movies -- and quite likely a director for Thor.

Shortly after news surfaced that Kenneth Branagh is in negotations to direct Thor, Marvel and Paramount announced a distribution deal for its Avengers-based characters, which included new opening dates.

The Marvel/Paramount deal includes five films: Iron Man 2, scheduled for May 7, 2010; Thor on July 16, 2010; The First Avenger: Captain America on May 6, 2011; The Avengers on July 15, 2011; and Iron Man 3.

"Coming off of Iron Manıs incredible success this summer, we could not be more excited about extending our relationship with Marvel," said Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount Pictures. "Marvel's iconic brand, its popular characters and its proven ability to create compelling and visually spellbinding films complement Paramount's great history of filmmaking. We look forward to a long and successful run together."

"Paramount is an excellent partner and an outstanding global distributor," said David Maisel, chairman of Marvel Studios. "Through our experience on Iron Man, Paramount has demonstrated a passion and ability to release Marvel properties theatrically, allowing us to focus on making great movies for the largest audience possible."

Branagh, 47, is a veteran actor and director with dozens of credits, including several adaptations of William Shakespeare's work. He was nominated for Academy Awards for Henry V (directing and acting), Hamlet (screenplay) and Swan Song (short subject). He has also been a multiple nominee for Emmy Awards and won as an actor for Conspiracy.

Branagh can be seen in the upcoming movies Valkyrie and The Boat That Rocked.

Thor has a script by Mark Protosevich, writer of I Am Legend. The film will deal with the Asgardian elements of the character.

Stardust director Matthew Vaughn at one point was working on Thor, but like his involvement with the third X-Men movie, he did not stay with the project. He is currently directing an adaptation of Kick-Ass, the Icon Comics title by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.

Thor has appeared in live-action once before, in the 1988 made-for-television movie Return of The Incredible Hulk on NBC.
