MONDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2008MID-OHIO-CON: DOUG JONES
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Doug Jones likes to refer to himself "as the tall, skinny guy who doesn't complain." Comics fans have grown to know him as Abe Sapien -- from Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army -- and the Silver Surfer from Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer.
The actor with a long resume of performing underneath and inside extravagant makeups staged a panel at Mid-Ohio-Con on Saturday.
Following are highlights:
* Jones said he is contracted for a third Hellboy movie when -- and if -- it happens. "There are no plans at the moment. It's more a scheduling issue," Jones said, noting that director Guillermo del Toro is locked into The Hobbit.
* Asked about his involvement in The Hobbit, Jones said del Toro mentioned him working on the film at the recent Saturn Awards.
* Will there be a Silver Surfer movie? Jones said he signed a three-picture deal with 20th Century Fox beginning with Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. "There have always been the plan for the Surfer," Jones said. "They've been sitting on a script that's been done for over a year."
Jones noted the Fantastic Four sequel didn't do quite as well as the first movie. "So the studio is a little bit leary to do either franchise, that's my guess," Jones said.
* Jones recounted the story of how he didn't do the voice of Abe Sapien in the first Hellboy movie because a studio decision to get a name actor for the voice. He said his performance in the second film was no different than the first one.
* Jones said he's in the last three minutes of Quarantine, coming out next week. He's in old-age makeup and has a terrible disease.
* Jones has a small role in Legion, playing the Ice Cream Man. "Have you ever seen a clown with a dagger in his hand? It might be like that," he said.
* Jones plays a knockoff of Agent Smith from The Matrix in Super Capers, which doesn't have a distributor yet.
*Jones stars in My Name is Jerry, a low-budget relationship dramedy.
* Jones said he just shot an episode of CBS' Criminal Minds. He plays a captain of a fight club. "So against type," he said.
* Jones said he is signed for a movie called Angel of Death, which doesn't have anything to do with his character in Hellboy II.
* Jones said he gets recognized more in public now. "With Pan's Labyrinth, the Silver Surfer and Hellboy II, it's been a great couple of years," he said, adding his face is seen more because of DVDs and the increased number of interviews.
* Jones said he is committed to movies for the long haul. "I want to die on the day I wrap on a Guillermo del Toro film," he said.
