SMALLVILLE: DOOMSDAY

The Doomsday arc of Smallville will kick up a notch with "Prey," next Thursday's episode on The CW. The network teased Doomsday at the end of Thursday's epsiode, "Committed."

Sam Witwer joined the cast of Smallville this season as the paramedic Davis Bloome, who becomes Doomsday. Blackout spells begin to reveal the character's true nature.

"He finds out that he is innately the opposite of whatever he wanted to be," Witwer said. "Hopefully the telling of that story will be very sad and psychologically messed up, and it will be probably very easily the darkest stuff Smallville's ever done.

"Eventually he is Doomsday, and he will eventually resemble the character that DC Comics fans are expecting."

Witwer acknowledged Smallville's Doomday is an intrepretation of the character from the comics, and hopes fans respond positively.

"It's with the blessing of DC Comics, and we are not invalidating any of the backstory that Doomsday's had previously," he said. "But we are interpreting and adding to that backstory, and hopefully the fans dig on it, and I'll take my best shot at that guy."

Witwer, formerly of Battlestar Galactica, said he's happy to be part of another franchise.

"It's really great because as a kid I was a huge Superman fan and watched all the movies with my parents," Witwer said. I'm a big sort of pop culture/mythology guy, so stories like the Superman mythology and Stars Wars mythology are significant and important because I think they're great tools for teaching basic morality, especially to kids."
