STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS: ASHLEY ECKSTEIN

Padawan Ahsoka Tano, voiced by Ashley Eckstein, is featured prominently in "Cloak of Darkness," Friday's new episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars on Cartoon Network.

In the episode, written by Paul Dini, Ahsoka and Jedi Master Luminara escort captured Viceroy Nute Gunray to trial, unaware that Count Dooku has dispatched his lithe and deadly assassin Asajj Ventress to free the prisoner and eliminate the Jedi.

A veteran of films and TV shows such as Sydney White, Blue Collar TV, Thatıs So Raven and Drake & Josh, Eckstein is a relative newcomer to voiceover work, but she has enthusiastically embraced the craft -- as well as her role within the Star Wars galaxy.

"It's such a fun line of work because you really get to tap into your imagination," Eckstein said. "The action is in your mind and it has to come through your voice, so you have to envision everything. I have to think, 'How would I sound if I were fighting Ventress right now? How would I sound if I were picked up by a giant bird, flown across the room, and dropped on the floor?' It's like imagination boot camp when you go into a session with (supervising director) Dave Filoni and the rest of the cast."

Eckstein said the physical noises are the most difficult to creat.

"You donıt think about these things in everyday life," she said. "We talk all the time, so the dialogue is easy compared to figuring out what sound you'd make if you got hit by a lightsaber or fell out of a spaceship. I definitely have to get physical in the booth, and I probably look like the biggest nerd in there, using a pencil as a lightsaber. I really try to get into it, and it just helps to sound like you're in the heat of battle."

The character's coming-of-age experience helps to ground Eckstein's performance.

"Ahsoka's emotions are very raw, and kids and teens can look at what sheıs going through and really understand it," Eckstein said. "Even though they're not fighting in life-or-death battles, they may be dealing with bullies or trying to make the sports team or trying to impress a teacher. All of those situations easily mirror her emotions. That's one of my favorite things about Ahsoka -- while her experiences may be different, the personalities and the emotions are the same for everyone."

XIII ON NBC

NBC has announced Feb. 8 and Feb. 15 air dates for the mini-series XIII, based on the European graphic novel series recently translated into English by Dabel Brothers.

Both nights will feature two-hour broadcasts.

XIII stars Val Kilmer (Batman Forever, voice of Kitt on Knight Rider), Stephen Dorff (Blade), Stephen McHattie (Watchmen) and Jessalyn Gilsig (Heroes).

Here's how NBC describes the mini-series:

"The adrenaline-charged mini-series begins dramatically as the first female U.S. president is shot dead by a sniper during her Veterans Day speech. Three months later, a wounded man is found tattered in a forest with no memory of his identity. The only clue is a tattoo on his neck -- 'XIII.' Could his lightning-fast reflexes and killer instincts betray him as the presidential assassin that the U.S. is desperately searching for? Submerged in a far-reaching conspiracy, which threatens to overthrow the entire government, XIII's identity becomes the key to unraveling a complex and dangerous secret that will shock and excite. From the first bullet, this gripping action-thriller will leave audiences gasping for more."

XIII also stars Ted Atherton, John Bourgeois, Greg Bryk, Lucinda Davis and Caterina Murino. The mini-series is a Canada/France co-production, developed and produced by Prodigy Pictures and Cipango in association with Power. Prodigy Pictures' Jay Firestone, Cipango's Edouard Vesinne and Thomas Anargyros and Power's Justin Bodle will serve as executive producers. Directed by Duane Clark, XIII is written by David Wolkove and Philippe Lyon.
