THE SPIRIT: SARAH PAULSON

Sarah Paulson, who plays Ellen Dolan in The Spirit, said that Frank Miller was a director unlike any other she has encountered.

"He spoke more in pictures than he did with words," Paulson said. "So we would come in the morning and there would be a giant board up. And he would have storyboarded, things he would have done during the night, some things he did while we were in hair and make-up. He'd just put things up, and they were these amazing drawings, sketches made with pencils or colored pencils sometimes, blue and gray, never bright colors.

"And they would take an image from the film and they would cut it out of video and they would put it on top of the image we shot, and it would be the exact same thing he had drawn."

Like in the comics, Paulson's Ellen is the former fiance of Denny Colt. But in the movie, she is a doctor.

"Frank decided to do that was because he thoought it would give her a reason to be around him all the time, beyond just her love for him," Paulson said.

"And in this particular slice of The Spirit story that they were telling in the movie, it was a good way to have my character around because he's always getting hurt. and I could always be there to fix him, even though he's always healing rapidly in a way she doesn't understand."

The Spirit opens on Thursday.

Batman the Dark Knight

SMALLVILLE: "LEGION"

The CW has released 20 images from "Legion," the Thursday, Jan. 15 episode of Smallville.

Here's how the network describes the episode:

"The aftermath of Doomsday's (Sam Witwer) attack on Chloe (Allison Mack) and Jimmy's (Aaron Ashmore) wedding leaves Clark (Tom Welling) in shock, but before he can search for the kidnapped Chloe, The Persuader (guest star Fraser Aithceson) appears and attacks him. Rokk (guest star Ryan Kennedy), Imra (guest star Alexz Johnson) and Garth (guest star Calum Worthy), also known as The Legion, step in from the future to help vanquish the Persuader and the group realizes Brainiac has taken over Chloe once again. Meanwhile, up at the Fortress, Chloe, as Brainiac, informs Davis he is Doomsday and was created to kill 'the other Kryptonian' and destroy the world."

"Legion" was written by Geoff Johns and directed by Glen Winter.
