WONDER CON: X-MEN

SAN FRANCISCO -- Marvel Comics announced a Dark Avengers / Uncanny X-Men summer crossover on Sunday at its X-Men panel with editor Axel Alonso and writer Matt Fraction.

The story will be written by Fraction. There will be bookend issues, including a double-sized Alpha issue in late June, and the crossover will run through both titles into September. Terry Dodson is drawing the Uncanny issues and Mike Deodato the Dark Avengers issue.

Alonso explained that the story begins with the deal between Norman Osborn and Emma Frost. "The deal was for Emma's people to be over there and stay quite," Alonso said. "And they don't stay quiet. Norman has to play clean-up."

Fraction said he will be writing Dark Avengers #7-8 for the crossover, and Brian Michael Bendis will return as writer after that.

"Brian and I have talked about this and he knows what we're doing," Fraction said.

"A lot of people are going to show up in X-Men/Dark Avengers. Many, many things are going to blow up in San Francisco.

Other highlights from the panel include:

Messiah War is the second of trilogy of the red-headed girl with green eyes, crossing through X-Force and Cable. "Cyclops is sick and tired of waiting to see what Cable is up to," Alonso said. "He finds a way to send X-Force through the time stream."

Deadpool will be a guest-star in the story.

* Alonso said reaction has been strong to the new Deadpool series. Alonso described the upcoming Deadpool/Thunderbirds story: "He sends Norman the bill and Norman ain't paying."

* In X-Factor, Madrox is reeling after what happened to his son.

* X-Men: Kingbreaker will carry "big changes" for the Shi'Ar Empire and Marvel Girl.

* Legion will return in the New Mutants series.

* Fraction on the Sisterhood story drawn by Greg Land: "Old favorites come back, current favorites take the dirt nap and I wrote the longest fight scene in my careeer, 26 pages."

* Uncanny X-Men #512 will feature a standalone story drawn by Yanick Paquette. The mutant group of scientists travel back to 1906, where a couple is about to have one of the first mutant babies.

* Alonso couldn't reveal the new creative team for Astonishing X-Men. "You'll be happy and the scripts are crazy," Alonso said. "We'll be shipping more regularly as well."

* Any plans for Jean Grey? "There's a redhead girl with green eyes you should keep your eyes on," Fraction said. "Second, was Jean the Phoenix or was Phoenix Jean? She and Bucky, they stay dead. That's the rule of comics."

* Alonso said X-Men: Legacy will continue to focus on Xavier, Gambit and Rogue.

* Fraction said readers will see how the "family/army structure" works within the mutants.

* Alonso said he remains interested in the X-Statix characters. "It's all about timing with that," he said.
