WATCHMEN: $55.7 MILLION OPENING WEEKEND

Watchmen brought in an estimated $55.7 million to easily top the box office in its opening weekend.

Opening in 3,611 theaters, the film brought in $25.1 million on Friday, $19.0 million on Saturday and $11.5 million on Sunday.

By comparison, 300 -- the previous film from Watchmen director Zack Snyder -- brought in $70.9 in its opening weekend in 2007.

Watchmen posted the third-largest March opening and the fifth-largest opening for an R-rated film.

Watchmen has little competition this weekend. Madea Goes to Jail was second with $8.8 million.
