THE PHANTOM MOVIE FOR SCI FI

Daniel Knauf and Charles Knauf are writing a two-night, four-hour movie event version of The Phantom for Sci Fi Channel (soon to by SyFy), the network announced on Monday.

Daniel Knauf created HBO's Carnivale and the father-son pair has teamed up on Marvel Comics' Iron Man and Eternals comics.

Here's how the network described the project:

"The classic comic book character The Phantom has been re-imagined and transported to present day in a live-action, four-hour movie. A favorite costumed hero for more than six decades, The Phantom relies on his wits, physical strength and skill with weapons over superhuman powers."

Production is slated to begin in April in Montreal with Paolo Barzman directing. The Phantom is produced by Muse Entertainment with a targeted air date of 2010.

The Phantom comics are currently published by Moonstone Books.

The network also announced two other two-night, four-hour movie events: Riverworld, based on the series of novels by Philip Jose Farmer, and Alice, a modern-day reinterpretation of Lewis Carroll's classic novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Zack Snyder, director of Watchmen, said the Black Freighter portion will eventually be incorporated into a cut of the Watchmen movie, just like the comics story.

The animated film was written by Snyder and Alex Tse (co-writer of the Watchmen feature) and was directed by Daniel DelPurgatorio and Mike Smith.

Gerard Butler, who starred in Snyder's 300, provides the voices of the Sea Captain. Jared Harris is the voice of Ridley.
