SUNDAY, MAY 3, 2009X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE -- $87 MILLION OPENING WEEKEND![]() X-Men Origins: Wolverine became the fourth consecutive X-Men movie to top the box office, pulling in an estimated $87 million over the weekend.
Wolverine posted the second best X-Men opening, trailing X-Men: The Last Stand, which had the benefit of the four-day Memorial Day weekend for its $104-million performance.
Of the 20 Marvel-based movies to reach theaters since 1998, 16 of them have opened No. 1. Wolverine figures to be the 14th to top $100 million and could become the seventh to reach $200 million.
By comparison, Iron Man opened with $102.3 million in the same weekend last year.
Wolverine opened in 4,099 theaters, a record for a 20th Century Fox release.
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past placed second at $15.3 million.
