ARCHIE COMICS FIRST LOOKS -- BARBARA AND SAMANTHA SLATE

Writers Barbara and Samantha Slate, the only mother/daughter writing team in comics, talk about Archie #598, due in stores on June 24.

Question: In "The Volunteer" story, does Archie get a look at his own future?

Barbara Slate: If Archie doesn't choose between Betty and Veronica, he certainly has to look forward to a tumultuous retirement. Archie looks at Charlie and sees two lovely women running after him and he sees himself in that picture. It may be stressful, but on the other hand, who wouldn't want two girls/women running after them?

Samantha Slate: I think that he does because we made Archie and Charlie almost the exact same person, except Charlie is an older version of Archie with a different name.

Question: Is the story based on any personal experiences? Have you or Samantha ever volunteered?

Barbara Slate: I got the idea for this story when I watched a TV program which showed teens volunteering at senior homes and how extraordinary it was for both the teens and the seniors. The teens learned from the seniors and the seniors loved having the company and somebody to talk to. I personally feel that if everyone in a retirement home was given a puppy, their lives would be totally enriched. Wait! Let me write that down! I think I have my next Archie story!

Samantha Slate: I don't think this story is based on any personal experience, but i did have a similar relationship as Betty and Veronica with my best friend Abigail.

It's just not as intense as theirs! Abigail and I both liked the same guy at one point, but we didn't sabotage each other when ever the other was with him. In fact we actually had a get together with the three of us!

My mom and I have done some volunteer work at my school. My mom also does some volunteer work at an art gallery in Hudson and in our community.

Question: What does Archie think about the love triangle when he is the observer?

Barbara Slate: Archie is worried about Charlie. He sees that Charlie is having a hard time making a decision. He would like to help but can you think of anybody who is less qualified than Archie Andrews?

Samantha Slate: I think Archie is very hypocritical when he's observing someone else's love triangle. In the first Charlie and Archie story, Archie said to Charlie "You gotta choose between them, Charlie." I think that Archie should do a little choosing himself before he goes around telling everybody else to.

Question: What type of lessons does Archie take away from his time at the senior center?

Barbara Slate: Archie realizes that helping seniors is a good and rewarding thing to do. However, with Charlie, he also realizes he is way over his head.

Samantha Slate: I think Archie enjoys spending time with older people and that they can be fun to be with.

Question: Does Archieís experiences at the senior center effect his relationship with Betty or Veronica?

Barbara Slate: We'll see. Samantha and I are working on a new story. Hopefully Archie will learn from Charlie but knowing Archie as well as we do, he will probably do his best to avoid making a decision.

Samantha Slate: Same as my mom. I'll give you a hint though. Betty and Veronica volunteer and guess who they are matched up with?
